The Toddler and The Breasts

The Toddler refuses to wean.

The Toddler has mastered the art of getting into my boobs by herself.

The Toddler is smart.

So here we stand, 15 months and 10 days on. Still breastfeeding.

The pros -

1- Supreme comforter. Cures all ailments. Oooops you just bit your tongue in half? Have a booby. You have gastro? Have a booby. Sore tooth? Have a booby.

2- As stated above Toddler can get into my boobs by herself. No need for me to expend any energy pulling up my top or egads! actually unclipping my bra.

3- Take everywhere, no spill, perfect temperature drink.

4- Contains a hormone to make Toddler sleepy.

5- Introduces Toddler to new tastes through the breastmilk.

The cons -

1- When Toddler has gastro, she has a tendency to stop sucking just long enough to vomit all over my stomach and then resume sucking. Toddler also has a tendency to bite when teething. When Toddler has a bleeding mouth you should remember that blood and breastmilk together will make Toddler puke pink milk.

2 – As stated. Toddler can get into the boobs by herself. Not a fuss when you are home, but a bit uncomfortable in the middle of the supermarket.

3- Toddler pulls off of her no fuss, no spill, perfect temperature milk recepticles and lets them drip everywhere while she stickybeaks. She also has learnt to make the recepticles shoot milk by squeezing. Shooting strangers is frowned upon. Shooting Daddy is funny.

4- Hormone only works as long as Toddler is still sucking. The sleepiness magically goes away as soon as the nipple is removed from her mouth.

5- New tastes are fine, as long as they are ‘good’ foods. Toddler has now developed a taste for chocolate and makes me share. Also Toddler slept really well when I had tequila. I’m thinking tequila may be a fantastic Xmas pressie.

I wasn’t sure if we would be still breastfeeding at 12 months. Mostly because I was underweight and I wasn’t sure if I had the reserves to make enough milk. At the expense of my teeth and skin, we have done very well. Now I’m not sure when we will be giving it up.

Is it worth it? Every day.

I haven’t weaned the boy yet either, though his yoga moves are driving me insane. And now, if he manages to finish a feed without falling asleep, he sits up and ‘high five’s’ me! With the Princess I said I was going to wean her at one, like it or not, but we never got that far. With Bad I’m taking it one day at a time, but he’s a breast man, so I’m pretty sure we’ve got a while to go. I hear you on the skin thing though babe. ARgh!

I like the visual of Amy spraying her Dad with your breast milk. It reminds me of the music fountains in front of the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Yes, totally worth it! #1 nursed until she was 2 years, 10 months; #2 still going strong at 18 months; together for almost 16 months. It sucked (no pun intended) A LOT and still does, but when it works, it works! Plus, I don’t even think you are “extended” nursing yet – are you? She’s still a baby! It’s lovely and sucky at the same time, but Amy will be a better person for it…right? LOL

Aw, bless your heart. Even with the cons, as you made obvious at the end, I imagine it’s the greatest. :-)

I breastfed Julia until she was 3. Once she was weaned, I enjoyed the freedom, but I’ve missed having that sure-fire soother. And, she’s suddenly started get colds – something she never had while breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is a huge committment to your child, but I’d do it again. In fact, I will be soon with Lucy!
