Dear Amy…

in Life

Dear Amy,

When did you become so big? In another 8 days you will be 16mths old, somehow Mummy seems to have lost that time. Didn’t I just give birth to you?

You can reach the edge of the bench now. Mummy has to keep growling at Daddy to turn the pot handles and cup handles inwards, because I don’t want you to ever pull anything hot onto yourself. It gets very scary when you can reach the oven controls. Mummy has to keep a close eye on you. The other day, you managed to pull a pot out of the drying rack. It landed on your head and all Mummy could think was ‘When did you get so tall?’

You are so independant, at the moment you are yelling because the very last nappy in the bag won’t come out no matter how hard you pull. It seems to be annoying you quite a bit. Keep working at it sweetheart, what is one more nappy for Mummy to pick up? You already threw 40 of them on the floor.

You love bringing Mummy her shoes and growl quite loudly if I am not ready to put them on. I’m not sure if you are just being helpful or trying to convince Mummy that you need to go outside.

You stopped talking for a month while you learned to walk, but now that you have the walking down pat, you are talking all the time. Mummy and Daddy can mostly understand what you want, even if other people can’t. I feel lucky that if you don’t have the right word for something, you will point at it until Mummy gets it right. Mostly you just like pointing and making Mummy walk around the house with you while I tell you the name of everything.

‘Dat?’

‘It’s the window’

‘Dat?’

‘It’s the door’

‘Dat?’

‘It’s a shoe’

‘Dat?’

‘It’s a beetle. No! Wait, do NOT eat it. Spit it out for Mummy, spit it out, okay? Good girl’

Well you get the idea.

You love having Mummy read a book to you, even if you do get bored after 2 or 3 pages and go and find a new book. Mummy has read the first 3 pages of every single book in the house, but I don’t think we have finished one in a long time.

You discovered the blue tongue lizard that lives under our bush the othre day. Mummy had to physically restrain you from trying to touch it. It would have bitten you, don’t you know that?

You follow Mummy and Daddy around the house, gleefully calling ‘Mum-meeeee, Dad-deeeeee’. It is very cute. What isn’t cute is trying to hang off my trouser leg, come on, you can walk now. Stop trying to stand on my feet already. Also? Mummy is a little short on trousers that fit her properly, most of them will fall down with a half hearted tug. Just because Daddy thinks it is funny…

You love to share everything that Mummy is eating. Yesterday, Mummy had a piece of chocolate that I didn’t share with you. You climbed up onto my lap and did exactly the same thing to Mummy that Mummy does to you when you need to spit out something bad. It was so funny, I had to share the chocolate.

You love going out and seeing new things. Your favourite place is the supermarket where you refuse to sit in the trolley or be carried. You insist on walking and checking everything on the shelves, sometimes this process becomes quite messy and Mummy needs to put you back in the trolley. You haten when I do this and tend to yell quite a bit. Luckily there are generally old ladies on hand to smile at you and you never can resist charming random people.

You are a pretty easy Toddler, much nicer than the baby you used to be. Mummy is enjoying Toddlerhood quite a bit and I think you are too. We still haven’t got the sleeping down pat, but you seem to slowly be getting better. Some nights you only wake up 2 times and that makes Mummy happy.

You are growing up so fast now. Everytime I look at you, you have learned something new. You can spin in circles, until you sit down with a bump all dizzy. You throw your arms around my neck and waist for a cuddle. Your favourite place first thing if a morning is snuggled up inside Mummy’s dressing gown, with Mummy, watching TV. We stayed that way thismorning for an hour. Longer than normal watching TV, but Mummy didn’t want to ruin the snuggle.

I love you so much.

Mummy.

Oh, so lovely. Just a beautiful letter! She’s at such a great age. I would say the best age, but I have to tell you – it gets better and better. I guess it’s because you love your kids endlessly at every age, and there’s something so wonderful about one.

I love the letter. Just love it.
