Not Really Together

in Life

I have been feeling a little fluey and off colour for a few days, but yesterday it hit me like a ton of bricks, along with an excruciatingly sore breast.

My Mum took me to the after hours doctor while Nat looked after Amy and joy of joys, mastitis was diagnosed.

I’m still not feeling 100%, like walking and chasing the toddler isn’t fun or easy, but I am a bit better than yesterday. As long as I don’t have to stand up, or move my right arm.

Or think too hard.

I have antibiotics and Amy is feeding well from the sore side (even though it hurts like a bastard).

So, knowing how sick I am, when Amy was being quite quiet in the kitchen this morning, I was happy. She wasn’t that deathly silence that signifies trouble, just a lovely quietness that was a break from the constant whining we have been having because EGADS! Mummy isn’t playing with me RIGHT NOW!

Eventually she wandered back over to me.

Complete with four lolly snakes in her hand, one in her hair and three stuck to her top.

Hmmmm, she had stretched REEEEEALLY high and managed to get the open packet of snakes out of the cupboard.

Fun!

I had to rescue all the non-chewed snakes and put them back away. So now I have a sticky, sugar hyped, whining Toddler running around.

I want to go back to bed.

Yuck, yuck, yuck. I hope the antibiotics kick in quick and give you a bit of relief. Too bad there isn’t some sort of medicine to treat “sticky Toddler”.

Oh, I had mastitis once. I feel your pain — I remember crying because it hurt so much to nurse on that side, but I think it got better pretty quickly because of nursing my baby on that side. Even though it hurt like a bastard.

I hope it goes away quickly! It is no fun at all. And Amy, give your poor Mommy a break!

Oh Amy!
Veronica, didn’t they tell you that they can sometimes trick you? Snakes are David’s favourites.

Poor you. I’ve never had mastitis, but I remember the six weeks of bleeding chapped nipples when the Princess was born, so I feel your pain. Nursing pain is excruciating. Curl your toes and clench your teeth….I hope the antibiotics kick in soon!

I couldn’t help but wonder this, so pardon my ignorance about mastitis, but wouldn’t it infect the milk?

Yeah, I moan about how my wife has this connection with my kids – she bore them, they grew inside her, yada, yada, yada. At least I’ve never had mastitis.

Oh, that is horrible! I had mastitis once and I simply refuse to ever have it again!

I hope you feel better soon. I’m sure you know lots of rest is what works best to help you get over it…and I’m sure every mother of a toddler who hears THAT prescription just laughs at the thought that rest is a possibility. Good luck with that!

Oh, and witchypoo, the recommendation when you have mastitis is to nurse your baby as much as possible. It will help you get better faster, and doesn’t make the baby sick. Just FYI. =)

On Veronica! By the time you read this, you should be feeling better. Mastitis SUCKS! I’ve had it a time or two (sad that I can’t remember) after #2 was born.

My question is for Kim – you left your poor, sickly baby girl at home to care for her own baby in THAT condition? Poor Veronica!

Oh, Veronica – make sure you get some acidopholus or eat lots of yogurt (or yoghurt) so you don’t get thrush with the antibix. That’s the deadly circle…

And to Witchypoo – no, mastitis DOES NOT infect the milk. Not to get all lactivist-geeky on ya, but mastitis is the infection of the tissue around the milk sinuses – not the milk, itself. Mastitis is actually contracted from the baby, herself – it happens most often when mom has sore/bruised/cracked nipples. There might be hairline “cracks” in mom’s sore nipples that allow bacteria from the baby’s mouth to get INSIDE the breast tissue. As the crack heals, the bacteria can’t get out and continues to grow, causing mastitis. That’s why mastitis is treated with antibix – it is simply a bacterial infection in the breast, not in the milk. I hope this makes sense 🙂 Veronica will tell you – I’m the boob-geek – HA!

Thanks everyone for the lovely thoughts.

Tara – When I wrote this I was feeling a lot better than when I dragged myself off to the doctors. Nathan was home from work, I was just waiting for him to get out of bed still (grumble grumble).

Mum was at home with a stomach bug and was absolutely no help to me at all, seeing as how she was becoming aquainted with the toilet bowl.

Sounds like you had a pretty exciting day; being sick with the toddlers. I know that can be quite a workout; hopefully you are feeling better now.
