Predictability

in Life

We ate tea tonight and like always, Amy smeared it all over herself. Unlike other nights though, tonight’s tea was sticky (and delicious) and it required more than a facewasher to clean her up.

As I was running the bath, it struck me that I do this all the time without thinking about it. It has just become part of who I am without me thinking about it.

I cleaned up the puddle of wee on the bathroom floor and plonked Amy into the bath. I sat down beside her in readiness to wash her hair, and realised I had sat in the ONE dribble of wee that I had missed cleaning up.

Typical.

I washed her hair, we played and I sat thinking.

Wow, this is who I am now. Here I am, sitting in a puddle of wee while my daughter examines herself using a toothbrush.

I absent-mindedly removed the toothbrush. I threw it in the basket to be microwaved later on. It wasn’t my toothbrush after all.

(What?! Microwaving does so remove the germs.)

Amy slithered around, let me soap the bottom of her feet and nothing else.

I think on.

I wonder how I do this day after day? It’s all the same really isn’t it? Lather rinse and repeat? Day after day. Will this eventually drive me mad? I don’t think so. But still, how did I, the anti-routine person, end up in such a predictable place?

SPLOOSH!

Amy tipped an entire container of water over me.

Predictable? HA!

Don’t make me laugh.

I guess microwaving could remove germs. It certainly removes nutritonal quality from food. Did I vote for you in both categories? Must check. My mind leaks occasionally, which is worse than sitting in wee, because you can wash the wee off, but oh, to plug those leaks!

In the interests of total Internet voting transparency, I voted for you, yes. But in another life (actually, under another alias) I also voted for Sarcastic Mom in both of the same categories. I feel so conflicted. But how could I not do so? Lotus was so …. persuasive. She made …. promises. But I digress. Anyway, what can I tell ya’? I’m from Chicago – land of the “Vote Early, Vote Often” attitude. And now, I guess, I can add “And vote for as many as possible”.

apparently rountine helps a child feel safe and that life is ‘normal’.

Any sort of routine, even in the things you say.

Dogs like routine as well πŸ™‚

Routine? What is this “routine” you speak of? Amos doesn’t know this word.

I adore how devoted you are to your daughter. Now, as for that toothbrush… what was she doing with it?

I think you can deal with the monotony because a) your daughter is freakin’ adorable – and I don’t like babies, so that’s sayin’ something and b) it’s a labor of love.

However, I’m a little grossed out by the microwave reference, and am pretty sure if I ever visit that I will keep my toothbrush under lock and key! πŸ™‚

Routine is the basis of a solid structured family life. Routine is how you get through when life throws you lemons. Routine means a timetable with room for unexpected fun things. Because you’ve already done the routine stuff, you can drop everything at a moment’s notice and go visit a friend, or shop, or bake a batch of scones, whatever, the routine jobs are done, mostly on auto-pilot. And Amy will grow up stable and secure because of it.
The water throwing? Obviously mummy needed a bath too……

river January 25, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Oh, and I’m fairly sure that microwaving doesn’t kill germs. Boiling does. Or soaking in a bleach/water solution.Rinse thoroughly after this last one. Or go shopping for a new toothbrush. In the supermarket where the chocolate is.

I voted for you. The page took forever to load, I got half my dishes washed waiting for it, but I voted. For Lotus too.
