So Many Things To Do With Blocks

by Veronica on May 10, 2008

in Life

Wooden building blocks have to be THE BEST toys ever. There are so many things you can do with them.

Stuck for ideas? Never fear! That’s why I am here.

1- You can stack them. (Hey, don’t you DUH me. Yes, you in the back. I heard you. Shush.) Then you can knock them over. Then you can stack them. Then you can knock tham over. FOR HOURS.

2- You can build Teddy a house. Then you can play EARTHQUAKE and knock teddys house over. (Teddy carnage cannot be shown due to the disturbing nature of the images.)

3- If you are a puppy, you can bury them. See?

4- Great for gaining an extra inch height. No, those aren’t my feet. Nathan’s feet are much prettier than mine, so he modelled for me.

5- You can spell inappropriate words. Leave messages for your partner in the kitchen. Hehe.

6- You can sit for ages while your toddler tells you what the pictures are.

‘Loooook! Doooog. Looook Mumeeee, TAT! Loooook! DOG! LOOOOOK TAT. MUMEEEEE LOOK!’

‘Yes sweetie a dog and a cat!’

7- Using a rolled newspaper, you can teach your daughter what to do when she see’s one of these. Clever girl learns fast.

Things not shown:

You can throw blocks at the dog. The dogs head goes CLONK when a block hits her. Poor puppy.

The blocks make for great booby traps at 2am when you are wandering through the house to go to the loo. A better use of blockage would be to booby trap the study where Nathan is busy playing computer. His feet are tougher than mine.

You can fill your glass of water with them. Or Mummy’s coffee. Or her bowl of soup. Really, they will bring up the level of just about any liquid substance. I like to think my daughter enjoys science. In reality, she just likes putting things in things.

You can drop them on Mummy when she is laying on the floor. Mummy’s head goes THONK when a block hits her. Then Amy runs away, shouting ‘Wun, wun, wun, JUMP!’ Yes, she does indeed know when it is smart to run.

All kinds of things blocks are good for…

You can also put them in a bucket with a lid and have a nifty noisemaker when you shake it. Might make a tradition of it being the last part of tidying up, making the drum.

lol…..today jordon and I were amused for hours by him drawing pictures. I got a picture of the three of us feeding ducks and a family portrait which I put on the fridge. It included Jordon, Nathan, me, the 2 dogs and easter bunny. Easter bunny was the biggest being and Nathan and I were drawn on the bed. I really don’t know what the psychology of this picture is if we are always portrayed as being in bed. (Which is what we spend Saturday mornings doing…)

p.s here’s a tip I learnt today…

*If the toy is not specificied for the bathtub, don’t put it in the bathtub.

I thought it would be fun for some toys cars in the bath until a piece broke off making the car sharp and it put deep scratches into the bath which were dark blue. Doesn’t look too good.

I’d just leave innapropriate words all over the house, all the time.

I’d enjoy that. Lots.

Thanks for the additional ideas!

The Kid and I started out with them about a year ago. I stack them while counting, to see how tall a tower I can make before he knocks it over. He gets to play “big monster knocking down towers”, while learning his numbers. I knew it was working when he started counting while stacking them. “wun, too, fee, for, fi! Now they are good for colors and letters too. “Ma! That’s a Y!”

Blocks = highly recommended.

I think I spend more time playing with blocks than the Toddler. She just doesn’t know what she’s missing out on.

dang it! Ree beat me to it… I was stuck on “she just likes putting things in things”. That’ll come in handy when she’s about 16.

Also good for putting down singlet tops to fake boobs…yes, I know they’re square but obviously the girls were oblivious. Boobs are boobs, no matter the shape, just so long as they are positioned in the general area of the chest!

Tara May 11, 2008 at 10:58 am

Ah yes, the unmistakable CLUNK. It sounds the same when it hits your sibling, except that it is usually followed by a “HEY…HEY-YA…WHHHHAAAAA….MMOOOOOMMMMMMMYYYYYYY!!!!”

lceel May 11, 2008 at 11:36 am

The next step will be when she takes Mummy’s bra, loads one up in each cup, and uses Mummy’s bra like a slingshot.

I thought this might interest you. It’s a report on mummy bloggers from Tassie who make new friends and enjoy chatting online for ‘adult’ time.

We must have had a million blocks in our house between us kids. Funnily enough we never played together with them so whoever wanted to build stuff would have the entire supply to play with. We had the square ones and a couple of buckets of those shaped ones, rectangles, cylinders, triangles. My brother would make huge towers and then bowl them down with tennis balls, I used to construct walls and use books from the shelves for roofs with cylinders and triangles on top to make castles. Eventually they all became the property of my sister who would name each block according to the letter visible and line thm up like kids in a classroom. The T block was always the teacher. she’d play schhols for weeks and one day would announce they’re all on holidays now.

Gina May 12, 2008 at 6:14 am

LMAO! Love it, there are so many things to do with the blocks isn’t there?

Happy Mother’s Day!
