Actually, it’s not disgusting or offensive

Sitting outside of Kmart today in a quiet corner, I was nursing Evelyn. Isaac had followed his father into the newsagent and so I sat, alone, holding Evie’s hand to stop her tearing at her face with her flaily little hands and people watching.

A woman walked in, trailed by her bogan boyfriend and bogan friend. Pregnant and wearing leggings as pants, she saw me and her face looked like she’d sucked on something sour and unexpected.

I smiled at her and she pointedly looked at me and said loudly “I can’t believe she’s breastfeeding in public like that. It’s disgusting and offensive.”

I was shocked and more than a little angry.

So.

Dear Bogan Woman outside of Kmart,

Breastfeeding my baby is not disgusting, nor is it offensive. I was, and am always, discreet and I can only imagine that you find the sight of a naked baby head utterly appalling, because actually, you couldn’t see a single centimetre of my skin, let alone my breast.

You know what was offensive? Your stupid behaviour. Your disgust at me minding my own business. Your insistence on making sure that everyone else around us knew you were offended.

Actually offensive; your leggings as pants. You couldn’t see my nipple, but I sure as hell could see your crotch.

Thanks for that.

Merry Christmas.

Well said! You told old Mumble Pants 😛

Glowless December 17, 2012 at 2:12 pm

FFS. Camel toe trumps the normal use of breasts any day in the offensive stakes. x

Ankia December 17, 2012 at 2:13 pm

*sigh* Stupid people walk among us every day…. Sorry you had to see her crotch! Lol!

Rivki Silver December 17, 2012 at 2:32 pm

How rude of her! On both counts. Leggings are not, and never will be pants.

Pixie December 17, 2012 at 2:57 pm

Ack. These people should never be allowed to breed.

Hugs

Susanne Schantz December 17, 2012 at 3:04 pm

I’m with Pixie!!

K@DragonflyMumma December 17, 2012 at 4:37 pm

Ahhh the bogan strikes again!!! Just shows their level of mentality, and yes I too agree with Pixie!

Mrs Woog December 17, 2012 at 5:02 pm

*clapping* xx

river December 17, 2012 at 5:03 pm

One wonders where bogan mumma will feed her baby.
In loos and baby changing rooms?
Or perhaps (and this is worse), just put a bottle in its mouth and prop it up with a pillow?

janine December 17, 2012 at 5:52 pm

Probably coke in the bottle rather than formula…

Other Fiona December 17, 2012 at 5:20 pm

What a bozo! (On a happier note – I was forced to pop in and comment because your blog header is the most adorable thing I’ve seen so far this Christmas!)

bigwords December 17, 2012 at 5:33 pm

Camel toe = bad. Breastfeeding in public = wonderful, necessary, normal and beautiful

katepickle December 17, 2012 at 5:35 pm

It’s kinda sad isn’t it… women can walk around in hot weather with half their boobs hanging out and no one things twice. You feed your baby and someone finds that offensive? Makes me wonder how our society got so confused…

Gerald Englebretsen December 17, 2012 at 6:02 pm

I would fair bet she was a camel *hoof* type, not camel toe. Ignore the tirade. Carry on being awesome.

Kimberley M December 17, 2012 at 6:02 pm

Hear hear! Love your work, V. Kx

Alison December 17, 2012 at 6:07 pm

When it comes to these ill educated, angry imbeciles I’m in favour of chlorine in the gene pool.

Denyse December 17, 2012 at 6:09 pm

What everyone says. Agreed x 100. The photo of your three beautiful kids for Christmas is the BEST! Love it.

Linda December 17, 2012 at 9:15 pm

Love it! Leggings are not pants!

Charles December 17, 2012 at 11:25 pm

It is disgusting and offensive…

..that people like that bogan act and speak like that. Or exist, really.

Emma December 18, 2012 at 12:33 am

Already I feel sorry for her child, and it’s not yet born.

And for you, what a horrible way to have a lovely calm people-watching moment to be interrupted.

Happy Elf Mom December 18, 2012 at 3:34 am

Maybe she has NO CLUE how often babies really need to eat and has some strange picture of the child eating three times a day with no screaming between meals. I just have to conclude that people who raise the biggest fuss about small children either don’t know or have forgotten how constant their needs are.

I have no objection to breastfeeding or even a pretty good glimpse of what is going on. Though I have seen one lady totally expose her entire boobie right near teen boys (and she was a young and endowed person) right during church service and I found that offensive and disgusting because at that point I don’t think it was about the baby if you know what I mean. But that sort of thing is so, so rare… at least in public… and at such a time…

Instead of confronting this young lady they BUILT an entire “nursing room” and required babies be fed there during service so as not to be a “distraction.” (??)

Happy Elf Mom December 18, 2012 at 3:35 am

PS This also wasn’t a glimpse or an “adjustment.” The entire boob out for the entire feeding. (!!)

Deb December 18, 2012 at 8:49 am

Karma’s a bitch. She can’t handle public breastfeeding, but look what’s about to hit her. Giving birth is the actual blood, sweat and tears and not a particularly private event. Then even if she whips bub straight on the bottle, her milk is going to come in, her boobs are going to hurt and leak, she’s going to letdown every time bub cries. And then theres the baby blues about that time. The freight train of reality is coming.

I feel sorry for bub. Not for any nonsense about formula, but who’s going to be giving her snuggles while mum copes with her disgust? Or is mum going to miraculously grow up and be a mother?

Carley December 18, 2012 at 8:52 am

BooooYEAH! You did an amazing job editing. I would have pulled my sweet baby away from her meal, shook my boob at her and yelled “THIS BREAST HERE??? It’s better looking than your ass in those jeggings”

Kate December 18, 2012 at 7:02 pm

The mind just boggles. Poor future child of bogan.

Kevin December 19, 2012 at 10:41 am

Sigh, something my wife and I experienced all to similar a couple of weeks ago with our newborn son. The one who I truly fill sorry for in all of this, is the unborn child from that bogan.

Just found your blog through BlogHUB, I will be sure to stick around. Cheers.

Anne December 19, 2012 at 7:06 pm

First of all, loving the new header. Very creative and very festive 🙂

Now to the Bogan Lady. Some people just don’t know when to keep their mouth shut. Breastfeeding is a wonderful thing. A Bogan Lady wearing tights/leggings that show off a nasty crotch, is not.

Starting to feel very sorry for that poor little unborn baby.

Merry Christmas to all 🙂

Marylin December 20, 2012 at 8:17 am

Urgh, and she’s breeding? Lovely! >_<
I would have found it hard not to say anything back… you've got more strength than me for sure! xxx

john malpas December 20, 2012 at 10:51 am

It can be embarrasing though if you are a five years older sibling standing by. And I remember this even though it was 70 years ago.

Pauline December 20, 2012 at 10:13 pm

Disgusting and offensive…what a joke.
You tell that bogan!

Watershedd December 22, 2012 at 11:01 pm

Really am laughing out loud! I need a thumbs up button!

minutepapillon December 28, 2012 at 6:32 pm

laura m December 29, 2012 at 8:29 am

Very well said. I used to pump at work in my car and I wouldn’t have stopped for anyone. I can’t believe that in this day and age people can still be that way. You go mom!

Awkward Camel Toe January 12, 2013 at 3:30 am

What a dumbass. People that see breastfeeding as disgusting piss me off. Mind your own business seriously.
