Amy-ism for a Friday

Amy: Mummy, I am cold. I needa hug you.

Me: Okay, but go and get some clothes out of your drawers.

Amy has a meltdown, throws herself at the floor screaming, a little difficult when she is twined around my ankles.

Me: Amy – go and get some clothes. They’re in your drawers.

Amy: BUT! I AM TOO LITTLE! I CAN’T REACH THEM!

I should mention here that she can definitely reach the drawers and has gotten herself dressed plenty of times. Just not this morning apparently.

***

Screeching ‘I am TOO LITTLE’ has been the theme around here lately, every time she is asked to do something. And geez, she is three, it’s not like I’m making unnecessary demands.

(Pick up that toy you dropped please, eat some more lunch, put your knickers back on, pass your brother back his drink.)

And she wails BUT I AM TOO LITTLE.

    Gorgeous girl.

Sometimes I feel like I want to cry and wrap myself around my mother’s ankles too.

I may have to steal her ‘ism’

Do you think that might work for me?
If I fell to the floor when I didn’t want to scrub the toilet?
“I’m too little, I can’t reach the bowl, or the scrubber, or the flusher”.
    No, probably not.

I love that she’s cold because she’s naked but she thinks a hug will warm her sufficiently.

Awwww, even if it’s frustrating (and I know, oh how I know it can be) Awwwwwww.

That’s my Connor, except he always wails “But I need help!” when he doesn’t want to do something. Little stinker. :)

  3. jean says

Hmm, I may have to use that line. It could actually work for me since my son is now taller then me.

  4. Marylin says

I get “but I’m busy” all the time for Zack. This includes when he asks me to pass the milk that is about a foot away from him because he’s “busy playing on my DS!”.

Cheeky lil sods aren’t they! ;)

  5. Brenda says

Hehehe. At least she doesn’t tell you “I’m not your servant.” Which is probably the most overused phrase around my house. Usually uttered by one little six year old girl called Hannah.

  6. statia says

Oh my God, this is so hilarious, because we’re totally getting the “I’m too littles” too. “Noooo, I’m too little for ni nights.”

Funny, my parental knowledge tells me otherwise.

  7. Seraphim says

The last couple of days I know EXACTLY how your daughter has been feeling. Me toooooo!

  8. Kristin says

Now that Anna is 7 and is too big for most anything, by her standards, I think I miss the “I’m too littles”. She still likes me to pick out her clothes in the morning and I usually still do, I’m not sure why, I think because I enjoy it and I know I will miss it. My little Danny on the other hand, always wants to dress himself. You just never know!

  9. Sharon says

Not quite up to the ‘Do I haaaaave to’ or ‘In a minute’ stage then lol!

Maybe you’ll want to try that “But I’m too little” phrase with Amy. I know I want to try it with my kids. :)

  11. Janet B says

“I’m busy! I’ll do it now-now!” That was our favourite line! :)

  12. Fiona says

I’m going to try that one on on monday ;)

I think Amy just needs a little babying for a day or two. It’s a stage they go through.

  14. Barbara says

Bah, mine just say no and go off in a strop. Tiny teenagers in the making!

I love it! We have the same except my son says “I’m just a baby”. The fact that he is a very tall, very capable three year old makes it quite funny. You know what is the saddest part of all? When I oblige and pick him up or whatever it is he ‘can’t’ do he is SO happy and doesn’t go on about being a baby anymore. Funny little things aren’t they!

  16. badness jones says

Bad pitches a fit whenever someone calls him little – I can’t call him baby, or little man, none of it. He’s a Big Boy. But when it suits his purposes, he’s a “SMALL Big Boy”. Face it. You can’t win.

My 19 year old somedays still likes to be called baby. Run her a bath, warm a towel she’ll purr like a cat. Other days she so shockingly independent. Really love Amy’s plea – I get days like that too! Now that is embarrasing at my age, although I am quite little at under five foot but that isn’t what she means really I don’t think. Even on occassion my 17 year old son will respond to – nite ba ba’s – a childhood baby name and he will respond nite mum mum!

I think Amy and I have a great deal in common – husband told me to stop tantruming the other day and I just couldn’t stop myself despite being fully aware that I was being unreasonable.

Being a little girl sometimes can be so tiring. This post brought the biggest smile to my face on an otherwise grey February day.

Haha. My 9 year old stepdaughter gets tummy aches at the drop of a hat. It’s impressive. And weird, too, how the one item on her plate that she doesn’t want to eat incidentally makes her tummy hurt. Weird. Definitely. ;) There’s always something. :)

  19. WarsawMommy says

Ha! Whenever my 3-year-old isn’t keen on doing something, he drops to all fours, crawls over to me and rubs against my shins and says, ‘But I’m a kitty cat!”. Because kitty cats can’t pick up toys/ put on their own socks/ bring me that piece of paper, etc.

Original, to be sure, but a bit irritating… I’m allergic to cats, you see!

  20. Hyphen Mama says

I made the mistake of telling Wynnie one time, back when she was about 4, “I know honey, I know it is SO HARD being a little girl.” Now??? EVERYTHING SHE DOESN’T WANT TO DO SHE CRIES HER FACE OFF AND SAYS “But mommy…. it’s so HAAAAAAAAARD to be a little girl and I can’t understand.” Dude, you’re 6. You’re at the top of your class. You can eat your lunch….really.

I would love to have a crystal ball and see Amy at 15. = )
