Dear Amy,

Wow, 2 years ago I had been home from hospital with you for 5 days.

You were born on September 5th and just over a week ago, you had your second birthday. Honestly, how does time go so fast? I would have blogged about you on the day, but I was busy helping a little girl get approved for treatment. It was time well spent.

You weren’t a sleepy newborn. In fact, you were more of a pissed off, grumpy, give-me-the-boobs-AGAIN-NOW! type newborn. Good thing I loved you at first sight, or I might have eaten you.

[I am joking here. You will understand when you give me grandchildren in 30 years. Minimum]

You have so much energy. I have no idea where you get it from, but sweetie, if I had 1/8th of the energy you do I would be set for life. You run full tilt, shouting ‘chase me! chasing chasing mummy!’ until I catch you and tickle you.

You imitate so much of what I do, it amost scares me. Mostly though, it just makes me laugh.

‘Mummy, I brush your hair? Oh! Ow, sorry mummy, hurts, BIG knots, ow ow ow, sorry. Kiss better! Done!’

You talk a mile a minute and most of the time I can understand everything you are saying. You also can repeat everything I say when I don’t want you to.

Your favourite song at the moment is ‘Shake it’ by Metro Station. Your father and I hate the song, but will listen to it simply to watch you dance and sing. You regularly tell Daddy to ‘Shake it Daddeeee! Shake it!’ I’m pleased that so far you have managed to keep all references to Daddy ‘shaking it’ within our household though. I’m not sure I’m ready to explain to people that no, your father is not an ‘exotic’ dancer, nor does he actually shake it.

You don’t breastfeed anymore, although I don’t think I can say you are weaned per se. More like, my boobs don’t actually have any milk anymore, therefore you can’t feed. You still insist on seeing my boobs at every opportunity for a snuggle and a kiss. When you are sad, you put your hand down my top, stroke my boobs and snuggle. Obviously my boobs are snuggly comforters. All bow down to the power of the breasts.

This is the last birthday you will have where you are an only child. For your next birthday, you will have an annoying little brother, who will no doubt rip your paper and steal your cake. You will deal with it.

Oh sweetie, I don’t think there is anything I can say to make you understand how you make me laugh and cry in the same moment. How you make me want to hold you tight, and pull my hair out. How you make me so happy.

You will just have to wait until you have a child of your own.

Oh and you? Are still very TWO. I love you though, even if you don’t sleep.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Wow, I’d have thought Amy was turning three. She’s just so stinkin’ smart. Think she can pop by and teach Josiah some words? Ones that don’t rhyme with duck.

I laughed so loud the other people in the restaurant looked at me funny. Especially the part about the boobs (we all know how enamored I am of boobs) and “Shake it, Daddy!”
Happy Birthday, Amy. A bit late, yes, but meant from the heart.

Beautiful!!!!

I think Amy will LOVE reading this someday.

My son Jack was a give-me-the-boob-NOW baby too. Before he was born, I had read/heard that babies nurse about every 3-4 hours. But SOME babies nurse as much as every 2 hours. I was LUCKY if I could get two hours between feedings.

Happy (belated) Birthday Amy! You’re beautiful!

V, do tell me you’re printing these out and binding them in a notebook for her to read when she’s older…

oh I am sorry I missed Amy’s birthday.
Happy 2nd birthday Amy – you are so cute. You have grown up before our eyes .

I love the letter Veronica and yes we are still nursing but I only let them morning and night now (& sadly overnight once to stop them waking Daddy)now. I refuse all daytime feeds.
They don’t sleep through the night either …so Amy is in good company.

I have a similar situation, a 3 year old beautiful girl and 1 year old boy. She is now at the stage where everything is “Matthew look at this!”, “Look Matthew”, “Hey Matthew”. Priceless. Don’t let it go by too fast.
