How I Came To Be Doing What I’m Doing. Part 4

in Life

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3,

Not yet 18 and I’m a Mum? I couldn’t believe it. I was so incredibly happy with the way things had turned out, that I didn’t feel like complaining about it though.

Breastfeeding was for me, easy. I know it doesn’t work out that way for other people, but Amy had a great latch and my nipples were pretty tough. From day 1 she fed every 2hrs. Sometimes every 90mins. I wasn’t too fussed about this as she gained weight very quickly and hey, that’s what happens with a newborn baby right?

Nathan took a month of holidays after Amy was born. Having him home was blissful.

Amy was a difficult baby from the get go. She loved being held upright so she could see everything. If she thought she was missing out on something then I was in trouble. I spent the first 6mths of her life holding her while I swayed/walked/bounced around from room to room, place to place.

She just never seemed content. She had ‘colic’, even though I was highly doubtful it was traditional colic. She didn’t seem to have tummy pains with it, she just screamed steadily for months. I think I am a little deaf still in one ear.

I started using the internet more and more. Mainly because what else could I do while I had a baby asleep on my shoulder/breast/arms. Also, Amy used to calm down while I sat at the computer with music playing. I revisited my Neopets from when I was a kid and had great fun reading the message boards there. I was at home with a baby, not talking to any other adults, yet I still managed to ‘talk’ to people.

After we moved up here, neopets because out of the question. It was too hard and took to long for things to load while I was using dialup. Nathan built Mum a computer and she had the internet connected. One night, I was staying at Mum’s house (with Amy) and she introduced me to Smooch.

Smooch was a dating site, but Mum was using it for very much the same reason I had used neopets. To interact with other people. To actually talk to other adults. A week later I signed up.

We used the chat rooms, we had fictional escapades using the message boards and we met new people. One of these people, Dean, introduced me to MSN and Myspace. Thankyou Dean, you are a legend. You started my foray into the world of real people.

I signed up for Myspace the next day. Amy was about 10mths old at this stage.

Stay tuned for Part 5 – The ending.

I started my website for the same reason – adult interaction! But who can you really interact with at 3 a.m.? Thank goodness for the internet.

go the internet! What would a traditional mum have done to keep occupied with sleeping baby in her arms? I reckon she would knit. You would have knitted 50 jumpers, 20 pairs of pants and booties and 30 bonnets by now!

And how would she see other adults? She would end up like a kindergarten teacher, you know even though you speak to them like an adult, they still have a sing-song voice. It’s cute really.

This is also how I survive work. I work for a bit then dissolve into a few blogs and work again. The day goes really quickly.

How do you think Bad learned to use the computer at only 12 months old?! Sneaky baby, learning my passwords when he was supposed to be nursing while I typed….
