In The Wake Of A Fire

in Life

This is a photo of my brothers high school as it burnt down last night. I feel a certain sense of ownership as it is also my old high school.

It was arson.

You can read about it here if you like.

What kind of lowlife person burns down a school? Especially a school in an area like Bridgewater. For those of you who don’t know (most of you probably) Bridgewater is predominantely a welfare suburb, but my word it is a brilliant school! Ooops, was. It was a brilliant school. Because some bastard burnt it down!

70% of the school is gone. Just pffft! and gone. Engineers are looking at the remains to see whether the whole school needs to be demolished, or if some small parts of it can be saved. I honestly am still having a hard time comprehending it.

Do people who do these things have no idea of the impact it causes? Is it just a purely sexual thrill for them? They don’t have to live with the consequences (unless of couse it was a student).

My little brother, who I must admit is NOT a social butterfly, has good friends there, he loved his teachers (as much as any teenage boy can), he was settled!

Now he has to up and move to a new school, where I can imagine that being one of ‘those Bridgewater kids‘ is not going to earn him any brownie points. Where he has to travel an extra 30 mins to get to school (he already lives 30mins from school). It just doesn’t bear comprehending.

Three school have been suggested for the students to split between. One is a primary school. I don’t quite know the logistics yet, but I am not sure exactly how you are going to split 400 students between 3 schools and not have huge issues with space and resources, not to mention the ‘us and them’ mentality that teenagers get.

What pisses me off even more (can you tell I’m angry?) is that in the reporting of this massive event, there has been the unspoken innuendo of ‘Well, it’s Bridgewater, what do you expect?’

I expected alot more than this.

It may be a low socio-economic suburb, but these people were proud of their school god dammit. You can’t blame arson on where something is located. There had just been $1.5m upgrades to the grade 9&10 areas, the school had amazing resources and amazing teachers to back them up.

Police are offering a $2000 reward to information leading to an arrest. Not sure if any locals read my blog but the Crime Stoppers number is 1800 333 000. Please if you are local and you know anything about this, ring Crime Stoppers. Even if it is only a rumour.

It just pisses me off that somebody can do something like this. I hope that they catch whoever it was soon. Very very soon.

If you liked this, share!

yeah veronica i know, it seriously sucks that some idiot would do that and just before the leavers dinner for the grade tens. 2.5 to 3 million dollars damage “whoa”, but the thing that gets my back up is that they’re going to split us all up and send us to different high and primary schools for up to twelve months, but the problem is for the people who can’t get any other bus service or transport because they are accustomed to having the convenience of having their school 15 minutes walk away, this is going to throw all the buses and free transport out of whack completely because they are going to have a sudden surge of 330 kids having to go on buses to different schools, so once again a space problem they say that the only schools we can go to are claremont, cosgrove or spread in small numbers in primary schools so theres the inevitable we have to split up our groups of friends. which could come as a real shock to many people there because they have been with that group since primary school or before and the injustice on us that will come because we WILL be looked on as “them” and “us” it really hasn’t sunk in yet that there isn’t a school anymore theres just a smouldering pile of rubble and melted metal frames of lockers and a whole years work completely ruined by smoke or destroyed by fire FUCKING ARSONISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yours truly your little(big) brother Dave grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!

The damage bill has just been upgraded to $10m, yes Davey I agree it is completely messed up. What a hassle for you guys.

I fear that the logistics of actually moving 400 kids to new schools will be a nightmare.

As of a few moments ago, no students will be allowed inside the school for at least 6 weeks.

That’s horrible.

And I can just hear the slight sneer in the reporters voices now.

Five bucks it was a couple of rich kids.

That’s just awful!

Sometimes, people just suck.

We had to relocate to other schools when I was a kid because a tornado ruined ours, and it was CRAPPY. It was exactly like you described – “us and them” and they split us all up, so you and your friends get separated. :-(

Dawn – I agree, or maybe someone from outside the suburb.

Lotus – Wow a tornado? Thats harsh splitting you and your friends up.

one question!! how can setting a building on fire give them a sexual feeling? breastfeeding is more sexual than lighting a fire

That is so sad. I’m so sorry for the teachers and for the students.

Our highschool was partially destroyed by fire once … it was in western suburbs too. It it really heartbreaking and so inconvenient for all the students and staff.
