Online shopping and planning for a birthday.

It’s Amy’s birthday in a few days and I’ve been slowly buying her presents online.

Of course, that isn’t going to stop the mad dash the day before, braving Father’s Day sales and actual people to pick up the last few bits and pieces, plus food.

It’s insanity, I swear.

The problem with online buying is despite knowing when things are meant to ship, you’re never really certain when they’re going to show up. So it’s a bit of a lucky dip.

Not to mention the excitement when the postman shows up and then the heartbreak when I won’t let her open the parcels RIGHT THEN.

Anyway, online shopping. I think it’s saving my sanity.

I am no good with shopping centres, with crowds, with one child tugging me in one direction while the other wails that we’re not going towards that THING. What thing? THAT THING ARRGGGGGHHHHHH.

Plus, my lovely EDSy issues mean I’m easily exhausted. And really, I’d prefer to use my precious energy on fun things, like the park, not stressful things like hunting down presents.

So, online shopping.

The only problem seems to be, department stores that do online ordering seem to have a teensy weensy selection.

Sigh.

It doesn’t really matter, as this birthday I’m operating on a less-is-more principle. Less presents, better quality, good food and people who love her.

Surely I can’t go wrong with that?

Excuse me while I go write a hundred more lists and work out what food we’re eating.

If you liked this, share!

Online shopping has saved my sanity on several occasions. I love hunting things down online . But hunting things down in a shopping centre? Not so much. Particularly good for family members interstate too – pick the gift and send straight to them. The postage is often cheaper than if you had to send it yourself.

I am also subscribing to the less is more approach for my son’s upcoming first birthday. He’s too young to know the difference, and our house is too small to accommodate truckloads of gifts so I’m going for a couple of quality items that will last him.

If I can’t buy something online I seriously rethink whether or not it needs to be bought. We grocery-shop in-store to take advantage of bargains and last-minute things, and because its easier for me to think on my feet, but everything else? Online please! Except clothes, because Bug has NEVER been the ‘right’ size for her age and because being tiny myself, I get sick of ordering clothes online and finding them to be wildly large.
When I was pregnant I lived on e-bay. We worked put at one point that money that we SAVED by buying baby-things on e-bay just while I was pregnant added up to a whopping £700, which is a months rent. Ebay is my friend.

What have you got her? What’s she into right now? I didnt know what to get Bug for her birthday, babies are weird. I can’t wait till she’s old enough to like things, not just everything.

I LOVE online shopping. Love it. I loathe shopping centres.

I think less presents, better quality and surrounded by people who love her sounds perfect.

Shopping centres are horrid at the best of time without Aspies having to deal with the horrible NOISE and LIGHTS and SMELLS and omgcan’twehavesomefreakingquietshopsforachange.
Which is why we lurve Dunolly with it’s teeny tiny supermarket and shops that have no NOISE or LIGHTS or SMELLS ;)

Seems to be a consensus here – love on-line shopping, hate the shopping centres ;-)

I don’t mind the centres too much if everything I want is in the one mall but when I have to trundle around three different ones to visit all of the shops I need to buy from, it’s too annoying to bother.

I love shopping, I like seeing things I want in other colours or maybe seeing what I want, but spotting something similar but even better right beside it. Or the same thing, but by a different maker and cheaper. Although cheaper isn’t always better. I shop online for books sometimes and dvds too, but if I can make it to the shops I prefer that.

I like online shopping for the same reasons, and because many stores have gone to policies refusing refunds but giving store credit instead. It is reasonably rare that I return things, but when I do I tend to also have found myself a good reason to no longer shop at the store in question. Online shopping in the UK falls under the same laws as mail order shopping, so there is a cooling off period once the item is in your hands.

Are you making a special cake for Amy’s birthday? You can buy various gluten free cakes online too! I know of one GF SF cake made by Delectable Treats: http://www.delectabletreats.com.au/menu.php?page=Cakes

I’ve never tried the chocolate one for myself but have heard from others it’s really nice. Due to such little genuine support for soy allergies and intolerances I have created a blog about a GF SF life in Australia. Take a look: http://glutenfreesoyfree.wordpress.com

Best of luck with the party, Veronica.

I love all types of shopping but I must admit it is very exciting going to the post office to collect a parcel.

Arienette – art supplies mostly. She adores drawing and things, so we’ve got a lot of faber castel stuff (big online sale. I was thrilled) and sticker books.

Amy – I’ve got a GF packet cake for part of it, I’m cheating, because normally I’d bake my own with almond meal, but I can’t dredge up the energy this year. I’ll probably also make a pavlova from the last 4 duck eggs I’ve got.

Online shopping… sooo much better than the real thing! I’m sure Amy will love her birthday! xx
