I’m not sure I can recommend a book, I imagine our tastes in reading are wildly different. I’ve just started reading Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese, about a couple of very young nurse/nuns who set out from India for Aden, on the way one dies and the other meets a young doctor who is very ill with seasickness. The prologue was very long and I began to think if it didn’t end soon, I’d give up on it, but then the actual story started. It is on my kindle, but it came to me via the usb my brother sent to me. Maybe it is available from Amazon or one of the other e-book sellers?
I have wide ranging tastes and will read pretty much anything that has a good story. I’ll have a look at Cutting for Stone, thank you.

I doubt we will have the same tastes, but I suppose you never know 🙂 I have just started re-reading The Shadow of The Torturer by Gene Wolfe, which I ordered from Amazon, it even has the same cover as the one I read as a teenager 🙂 I am impatiently awaiting Moonlit Tours by Alistair McHarg (arrival date 7th Jan) as I have already read his Invisible Driving, a memoir of his bipolar activities which took him to the highs and utter lows of insanity.
I only occasionally do ereaders if the book is not one I particularly want to keep so not sure what is available on there, sorry. Books I have read in the past that I truly loved were Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs, The Time Traveller’s Wife (have not seen the movie, too afraid they will have ruined it, even though I love the actors!) The Life of Pi (I see they have made a movie of that too) and A Fraction of The Whole by Steve Tolz (a fascinating, quirky book with so many layers and levels), and I have always loved everything by John Irving, my favourite being A Prayer for Owen Meany.
Also, on the off chance you have never indulged in The Hitch Hikers Guide I recently re-read the “trilogy” and it was still brilliant after all these years. And anything at all by Terry Pratchett, particularly the Discworld series if you are looking for a chuckle. Desperately sad to think that such a brilliant man is suffering from dementia 🙁 I also recently re-read Stephen Donaldson’s Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, what an amazing writer. If you like murder mystery I have always been partial to a bit of Ruth Rendell, particularly her earlier works, and her other half Barbara Vine.

I’ve just finished The Miseducation of Cameron Post, and REALLY enjoyed it. It was a Book Club choice, which I probably would never have picked myself, and though it’s labelled ‘teen’, it’s very thought-provoking, and beautifully written. If it was a movie, it would be a moody lomo film.

Hmmmm … Depends what you’re in the mood for. I recently read Emily Maguire’s Fishing for Tigers (available on Kindle 🙂 and it was pretty good. Zadie Smith’s new one, NW, is also worth it although a bit heavier. Or if you like slightly twisted comedic stuff, maybe Nicola Barker’s The Yips?

“Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” by Lisa See is one of my all time favourite books. Yes, it’s on Kindle. A close second is another lisa See book, “Peony in Love”. She has such a beautiful way of writing.

I have recently enjoyed ‘Hounded: The iron druid chronicles’ by Kevin Hearne. It’s a mix of modern life, druids and gods of all persuasions. Another one I enjoyed recently was Angelfall by Susan Ee. I think it’s aimed at teenagers, as it’s main protagonist is a very feisty teenage girl, but it was a fun, if rather quick read. If you enjoy police detectives with a magic twist try Ben Aaronovich’s books.

I just finished reading ‘Living With Max: Our Family Story’ by Chloe Maxwell, a book she wrote about her journey with her son Max, who was diagnosed with autism. I found it to be a very interesting read.

Because I’m too lazy to actually go look on Goodreads, have you read any Robin McKinley? I recommend Sunshine, since we seem to have similar tastes. Or any of her other books like Chalice, Spindle’s End, etc. Some of her books are on Kindle, some are not.

I would like to recommend any book written by my friend Robert J. Sawyer. I’ve read all of his books, and proof read his latest 2, and I must say they are all fantastic. He has an amazing way of telling a story, and sneaking in some very big philosophical questions, which will leave you ruminating for months.
If I had to pick one to start with (as you’ll most likely be unable to stop reading him), I would have to pick the WWW trilogy; Wake, Watch, and Wonder. Fantastic story about a blind girl gaining sight, and the internet gaining consciousness.

I know it’s a few years old but I am loving Alice Pung’s Unpolished Gem. Oh and speaking of gems, totally you must get Beth Ann Bauman’s short story collection Beautiful Girls. It is a bargain on the Kindle and they are all just so very good. And if you enjoy those and get a taste for short stories, I can also recommend Karen Hitchcock’s Little White Slips. Also The Element of Need by James Bradley.

This one isn’t new, but it’s a favorite …Ahab’s Wife: or, The Star Gazer, by Sena Jeter Naslund. It takes you away in time and place — the pages fly. My friend re-reads it every summer on vacation, it’s that good.
OK I have gotten into pretty pathetic trashy romance lately, not to mention that my preferred romance is Western historical (yes, I said pathetic and trashy, I know it). But I LOVED and I mean LOVED Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold by Ellen O’Connell (self published). And also Dancing on Coals by the same author was good. They are not your typical romances, in fact, I think she could have gotten away with marketing them as fiction rather than romance.
