A big first

in Life

I rang poison control today. Yes, it finally happened, I had to ring them. Amy took the lid off a spray bottle filled with pine-o-clean and eucalyptus oil and used the straw part (you know, the part that actually sucks up the liquid so it can be squirted? yes, that part) as a straw to drink her milk.

The cup smelled like pine-o-clean, the straw smelled like pine-o-clean and her breath smelled like, you guessed it, pine-o-clean.

Sigh.

We were given instructions on what to watch for and what to expect, but basically, if your toddler ingests a mouthful or two of pine-o-clean, you’re not going to have to race to emergency in an ambulance.

(For the record, we were told to watch for breathing difficulties, excessive hyperactivity or excessive lethargy. They mentioned she might also vomit, but not to worry too much unless she couldn’t stop vomiting)

So far, she hasn’t even complained of a tummy ache.

Seems that for Amy, actual cleaning poison is less like poison than gluten.

Heh.

Glad to hear Amy is okay. Her tummy will be nicely disinfected now. Did she say anything about the milk tasting funny?

Glad to hear she’s okay, I’m sure we all ate or drank something we shouldn’t have as children, and we turned out fine…well we turned out at least.

good to hear.

Sarah November 6, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Oh dear, thank goodness she is ok. You must have got a helluva fright!

Ali November 6, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Oh my gawd! She’s hilarious, I have to say. I’m relieved that she’s ok.

Sharon November 6, 2009 at 7:59 pm

Well that should flush the last of the gluten from her system! Glad she’s ok though. Honestly you would think the taste would put her off. Kids, huh!

Mind you I had to keep all of that sort of stuff under lock and key when my little adventurer was young. Not so much to stop him eating or drinking it but because he would mix potions to paint things with – like my clean washing that was drying on the clotheshorse. And the 2 litre bottle of cooking oil he used to wash the kitchen floor. Actually, it probably would have been better to keep him under lock and key. . .

Relieved Amy is ok. You are not alone, have I ever mentioned the Ibuprofen that eldest gave youngest (climbed up to a very high cupboard with child lock & opened the child proof lid)…(a night in hospital) I was on the loo! Or the Laurel berries fed to youngest, ambulance required & yuk charcoal stuff, vomit ….. or the ….. need I go on although there is more. Fortunately I didn’t have to chastise because by the second time a very very stern registrar at A & E had very strong words, eldest’s bottom lip wobbled some then more. I felt like a crap parent until they showed me the book they kept especially for recording such incidents – until you become a statistic in these records one imagines it will never happen to you. Errr don’t hold your breath on this one!

Congratulations on becoming a member of the ‘my child ingested a poison club’ Veronica. Alls well that ends well as my gran would say.

OH AMY!
Pine-O-Clean! Goodness! At least you know her mouth is going to be squeaky clean!

lceel November 7, 2009 at 12:07 am

Ahhhhh. Nothing like the clean, fresh smell of a youngster pooping pine-o-clean.

Marylin November 7, 2009 at 12:09 am

Phew, glad to hear she’s ok! 🙂

Rachel November 7, 2009 at 4:19 am

Well, you have to give her kudos for creative problem solving on that one. The girl wanted a straw, she found a straw. Little bit piney, but effective none the less.

‘Excessive hyperactivity’ – How can you fucking tell?

kys November 7, 2009 at 6:24 am

Glad she’s ok. I’ve had to call them before, too.

Toni November 7, 2009 at 9:17 am

Dear God, how do our children survive their childhoods?
My darling son drank bleach one time. The treatment? icecream. And a day off school.
Yeah, SO effective as a deterrent……

Cri November 7, 2009 at 9:25 am

WOAH. Very glad she’s OK.

Tanya November 7, 2009 at 3:48 pm

I’ve been there. Many, many times. Gald she is okay.

Leslie November 8, 2009 at 1:03 pm

I’m glad she’s okay! When I was a kid, one of my cousin’s drank something that had arsenic in it. Ultimately, he was okay, but not before a trip to the hospital and a big gulp of that charcoal stuff that makes you puke, which was completely terrifying.

Darnonymous November 8, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Oh man. Glad to hear she was fine! Seriously, WTF are kids thinking, could she not smell it?! My kid scooped a mouthful ov Vicks Vaporub. I don’t get it!

Joyce-Anne November 9, 2009 at 1:25 pm

Scary! Glad Amy is ok.

Ms Constantine November 9, 2009 at 4:56 pm

Thank goodness she’s alright.
Imagine if she was still on the gluten, how would you known which was causing the hyperactvity etc!

Mrs. C November 10, 2009 at 2:01 am

!!

I hope she is still ok. Just took my breath away reading that.

anne nahm November 10, 2009 at 2:28 am

I’m so glad she’s OK – and your last comment and the pine-smelling-poop commenter had me barking laughter.

Cat November 10, 2009 at 3:03 am

Oh my god SCARY! Thank god she’s ok! I remember a kid drinking most of a bottle of peroxide when we were little and it was very scary!

Hyphen Mama November 10, 2009 at 12:17 pm

OH MY GOD! I am seeing my future….right here. Mack ate half a bottle of Hyland’s homeopathic teething tablets. I called the company and they said to give him some water to make sure they all went down. Well, thank heavens for homeopathic.

After reading this… I think I’m going to get rid of all my cleaning stuff and stop cleaning. Yeah, that’s right.
