Aiming for rubbish free lunchboxes? + Giveaway

Amy’s class has been talking a bit about rubbish recently and how to reduce rubbish in their lunchboxes. Of course, I didn’t realise this until I was at the swimming carnival with the Kinders and heard one boy proudly telling the teacher that he had “no rubbish today!” and being praised for it.

I know that Marita’s school has been doing similar things and so I started to think about how to reduce rubbish in our lunch boxes. I use reusable containers for as many things as possible, but I am guilty of just quickly wrapping things in cling wrap and sending them, because it’s easy.

Imagine how pleased I was when the lovely Rebecca from 4 My Earth expressed interest in running advertising on my sidebar, and having me review her products as well. 4 My Earth sells all kinds of things, but I was really interested in the lunch wraps and pouches, that allow you to wrap sandwiches and keep them fresh.

Not to mention that they are super cool looking.

I’ve been sending these to school with Amy’s lunch for a week now with no problems whatsoever. I was a little worried that they wouldn’t make it home again, but Amy has adjusted really well and they are making it home at the end of the day perfectly.

They’re really simple to use and according to Amy, they’ve kept her lunch “yummy and delicious!” as well. You place the sandwich in the middle and then wrap it, using the velcro to hold it closed. Plastic lined, but woven material on the outside means that they look great and they keep everything fresh.

To clean, I’ve just been rinsing them in the washing up water at the beginning of the washing up and then hanging in the window to dry, which seems to be working well for us.

The pouches are exactly what they sound like and are pouches for placing food in. I haven’t tried these out properly yet because I’ve been too slack to bake, but the large pouch would hold a piece of quiche, or a slice quite well, whereas the smaller one looks perfect for putting crackers, or sweet biscuits into, or even slices of cucumber and olives.

Oh these look just beautiful. I’d love to have some, even though I’d be being a bit greedy, as I don;t wrap anything currently (I use tupperware lunch boxes with the portion holders, there is no need for cling wrap with them).

Favourite lunchbox foods? Egg & bacon pies, sushi (for the eldest – the 6 yo doesn’t eat it), savoury muffins, cold sausages (bizarrely, both kids *adore* this as a lunch food).

Super Sarah November 4, 2011 at 1:43 pm

I was always a picking lunchbox eater, for three years in a row in primary school I took a cheese and chutney on brown sandwich, I wouldn’t eat anything else. Sadly it appears Amy is quite similar to me because for nearly two years now she has taken a jam sandwich on brown for her preschool lunchbox! My best lunchbox filler is leftovers… especially cold pasta with pesto, pinenuts and parmesan, delicious!

What a cool idea! I’ve reverted to cling wrap this year, not good. We used to use Tupperware boxes, but with individual boxes for each thing (sandwich, snack, fruit) I couldn’t fit them all in the one lunchbox. I really love the idea of these lunch wraps and pouches, and they’ll fit in a single lunchbox!

Favourite lunchbox food? Well, we are not very inventive around here: sandwiches and an apple every day! But occasionally the school does a Sushi Day, and Mr. 7 loves it!

kathryn November 4, 2011 at 2:24 pm

Aarrgghh. I’m put off by the spelling. I can’t help it. I can see it’s a great idea, but I can’t stand when numbers and single letters are substituted for actual words, and I tend to avoid any business that does it.

after making lunches for primary school children at my house for the last fifteen years, my favourite lunch box food is that which gets eaten and doesn’t have to be thrown away and wasted at the end of the day! In Summer, we all love stone fruit for lunch. smiles and thanks for the chance to win a great prize pack. A

….. was the title a deliberate pun? I translated this into Americanese as “Would you like some crappy free lunchboxes?” If it was deliberate, it worked – I clicked on it because it made me laugh.

I like those things – brilliant idea.

Chantel November 4, 2011 at 3:36 pm

What a great idea!!!! The only thing Zeb will eat is sandwiches, and cheese sticks, so they are our staples whenever we pack a lunchbox!!!

marilyn gibbins November 4, 2011 at 3:36 pm

ham all day every day

Jenny November 4, 2011 at 4:56 pm

Grated cheese and grated carrot sandwiches were my favourite in school, and now my kindy boy likes them too.

Erica (@mixotrophy) November 4, 2011 at 6:14 pm

Becky’s comment made ME laugh! I had to look at the title again before I got it 🙂
Now that the Tassie weather is getting to the point where eating outside is actulaly an option, my favourite lunch box treats over the last couple of weeks have been quick salads or cold homemade pasties. Last week’s pasties were chicken and pesto, whipped up in Thermie, my trusty Thermomix. I’d never made them before, but I was very happy with the result. Yum!

pixie November 4, 2011 at 7:07 pm

fave lunch box food.anything they will eat…ham sangers, fruit, slices, cakes, muffins. My girls are easy to please.

river November 4, 2011 at 7:51 pm

They look great, but I’ll pass on entering. I use ziplock bags over and over until they fall apart before I get a new one out of the box. Since I bought 4 boxes when they were on special, oh, way back in 2007?, I have enough to last me the rest of my working days.

Mum on the Run November 5, 2011 at 12:07 am

These look fantastic!
I was a serial sandwicher dumper, but my Magoo absolutely loves a ‘mediterranean’ lunchbox. Salami, olives, sun dried tomatoes and sourdough is his favourite.
If my Mum had been so obliging, those soggy sangers might have made it to my mouth!!
🙂

Amie November 5, 2011 at 8:29 am

Muffins! they’re easy to make, come in hundreds of sweet and savoury flavours and freeze well – too easy 🙂

Cassie November 5, 2011 at 8:45 am

I use fa too many zip lock bags, to the point where I almost bought a box of 5 from Costco but have no where to store them. I think those little things are a great idea.
Personally I hated eating sandwiches every day at school, but my little girl loves “Happy Cow cream cheese sandwiches” and I like to give some grapes, as they’re healthy and not very messy and easy for them to eat. She also likes Tiny Teddies, the best bribery I know, but would be more eonomical to buy a box and put some in those nice little snack bags rather than buying a multi-pack. And those fruit cereal-oat bar things are healthy and yummy too.

Cassie November 5, 2011 at 8:48 am

And my keyboard is playing up and I didn’t read through before posting, I meant a box of 450 zip lock bags not 5. Imagine what they’d do to the environment it’s terrible to use so many!!

Polly November 5, 2011 at 9:33 am

My fave lunch box food is some crusty bread with a bit of hummus and some tasty extras like cheese, olives, tomato and some chorizo.

Wendy Hatton November 5, 2011 at 9:41 am

Sultanas & walnuts are popular right now. No usually bread as it doesn’t ‘taste the same’ by lunch time. Rice crackers are good, wrapped separately from some slices of cheese. I wrap in greaseproof paper and reuse ziplock bags to try and cut down on waste when I can.

lauredhel November 5, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Favourites rotate here. Sometimes, it’s just a vegemite sandwich with a container of strawberries and blueberries. Much of the time, it’s “burritos”: wholemeal tortillas wrapped around refried beans, diced avocado and tomato, and grated cheese. Banana muffins go down well (cooked in batches and frozen), and a recess-time favourite is pink lady apple slices, each with a sliver of cheese and wrapped in a third of a slice of ham. My boy does best with plenty of protein to keep him going – I wish I could get him turned on to cold quiche, as we have so many home-laid eggs right now, but that’s proving to be an uphill battle!

In winter, he takes a thermos of soup when we have it, usually butternut or lamb & barley. This makes the teachers jealous.

Allicia November 5, 2011 at 1:49 pm

For the past 3 weeks I’ve been taking a sandwich and a bag of chips to work for lunch. I’ll probably switch it up sooner or later, but right now that’s all I want to eat.

Lauren Turner November 5, 2011 at 6:53 pm

My favourite lunchbox food at the moment is a new recipe that I make in my Thermomix called vitality truffles (I like to call them fruity bites). Ingredients are dried figs, dates, dried apricots, raisens, hazelnuts, almonds and rolled oats – whizzed up in the Thermomix and rolled into balls then coated in sesame seeds. They are a delicious snack that cost 20c per ball and so easy to make – my healthy and economical snack!

Deb November 5, 2011 at 10:56 pm

We do a little smorgasbord with a roll and cherry tomatoes, cucumber hearts and olives. Big girl loves cottage cheese and ham on her roll. We put most things into plastic boxes, the little pouches would be good for serves of biscuits.

Marita November 6, 2011 at 10:01 pm

These are so cute. My girls are loving shaped sushi rice bites. So easy to make too and I can pop in a salad with them.

melanie w November 7, 2011 at 4:38 am

Crusty chicken and salad roll, homemade muffin and watermelon.

Wendy S November 7, 2011 at 4:31 pm

Cold chicken, or ham and salad sandwiches mmmm yummy!

Natalie Blanch November 7, 2011 at 4:35 pm

When I was at school, one of my favourite packed lunches was tuna (with mayo and corn) on crackers. I just can’t cope with soggy sandwiches…

Janice November 7, 2011 at 10:24 pm

These are aweseome! Now that my kids are getting older and have another one entering into school next year I am very aware of the amount of rubbish left in their lunch boxes. The school my daughter is attending has a rubbish bin free Tuesday every week which is a fabulous idea. All rubbish has to go home with the kids, hoping to raise the awareness.
My favourite lunch box treat would have to be watermelon cut up into shapes using cookie cutters…..my kids love them, especially in the hotter months. 🙂

Rebecca November 8, 2011 at 11:45 am

My favourite lunchbox food has to be baby cucumbers. Perfect snack size, no cutting or wrapping required. My daughter LOVES them!

Lydia November 8, 2011 at 5:58 pm

my favourite lunch box food is boiled egg sandwiches. just yummy!!

jen November 9, 2011 at 12:20 pm

The think I like about these is that they can be put in a pocket. I use (and reuse) little plastic bags for biscuits for instance and they usually find their way back because they get shoved in a pocket.

Sonya M Blyton November 9, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Wow! they are so versatile and convenient and would hold my all time favourite Beetroot Sandwich 🙂

Melissa November 9, 2011 at 10:00 pm

What a great idea! I use way too much cling wrap! The most requested lunch in our family is the good old vegemite sandwich!

Kym - Mumma's Mini Mes November 13, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Mini Me eats very few foods so our favourite is a sandwich, probably Nutella, as it will usually get half eaten! she loves her fruit bar too.

Narelle Rock November 13, 2011 at 12:07 pm

I always send my little girl to kindy with yoghurt, a cheese slice, some fruit and sandwich, for the older boy, he has a wrap with lettuce, cheese, tomato, onion, capsicum, ham and mayo..healthy and tasty, these look amazing!

kerry santillo November 13, 2011 at 12:12 pm

Fruit is my favourite and nuts, sultanas.
pit bread and my good ole vegemite, yum!!!
thanks for a chance 🙂

Joyce @ TOT: HOT OR NOT November 13, 2011 at 2:00 pm

Fruit is my favourite – helps keep things healthy when you have a huge sweet tooth!

Bec S November 18, 2011 at 1:46 pm

I’ve been packing home made pizza for my son for school- so easy as we make it on the weekend and freeze and then just grab as needed!
