It’s funny, I haven’t really had any cravings this pregnancy. Sure I occasionally say to Nathan ‘I could definitely eat some …. if we had some’ but it’s never dire enough to make me beg him to go to the supermarket for me.
Not that begging for a supermarket trip would work, seeing as how the closest one is a bit over 30 minutes drive away. Sigh.
I drink a lot of milk and I’m a little worried if I run out of chocolate, but that’s nothing that I didn’t do before I was pregnant. I also eat a lot of fruit and salad, but again, nothing that I don’t do when I’m not pregnant. I didn’t crave much with Amy’s pregnancy either. I ate a lot of egg and bacon sandwiches, but I like eggs and bacon anyway so I don’t think it was that unusual.
The only strange thing is I will eat Vegemite when I am pregnant and normally I detest the stuff. Generally with butter on Saladas (dry biscuits) *shudder*
But it got me thinking, what kind of things do other pregnant women crave?
So, I did some googling.
[If someone got to your site by googling ‘pregnant cravings’ or something similar, Hi! *waves* That was me.]
So my [oh so scientific] research has turned up lots of different cravings. Women saying that they craved Hungry Jacks or McDonalds, chocolate paddle pops, coke, fizzy drinks, lollies etc etc.
It makes me wonder if we use pregnancy as an excuse to eat more junk food than we normally would? Especially as a lot of women seem to be confessing that they still ‘crave’ the junk foods even though they aren’t pregnant anymore.
Not that I am judging, I’m just wondering is all.
However, an equal amount of women are saying that they craved fruit, milk, salad, steak and vegetables and really healthy stuff. Goes to show how pregnancy affects us all differently!
Now for some slightly unusual cravings…
– One women says her friend craved Radiant Washing Powder. Yuk! Instead of eating it (which she wanted to do apparently) she washed all her curtains in it and hung them up to dry inside so the smell went through the house. Definitely a much safer way to deal with a washing powder craving!
– Gravel. Ugh. Can you imagine how it would feel in your teeth?
– Belgian Chocolate ice cream and chives. Together. Very um, interesting?
– The smell of cumin. She said she carried a little tin of cumin around so she could sniff it during the day. Now that is interesting!
– raw red onion slices dipped in honey mustard.
– squashed up mars bars with pickles
– French fries and ice cream
And last but not least…
– “I craved air fresheners especially the orange and lemon ones. I used to just stand in a room and spray and smell”
Hey, at least her house would have smelt good!
So I’m curious, did you crave anything when you were pregnant? Anything weird? Any stories to share? I promise I won’t mock you!
And if you’ve never been pregnant (because a pregnant Xbox would be interesting to say the least) do you find yourself craving foods sometimes?

Thanks to Yahoo Answers for most of these cravings.
i wanted to chew gum, which i never do normally. and after odessa was born i saw a remaining half pack of gum on my desk and thought “ew!”

I knew someone who craved charcoil. I didn’t crave so much as turn off food. Red meat, just the smell alone was too much, and I love red meat! I guess that would be a whole other post though,, sorry,,lol.

None of the things I craved while pregnant were anything I ate before.
With son #1 it was toast with cheez whiz and strawberry jam (yes, together). I could not eat any dairy though it made me sick.
With son #2 it was summer berry instant oatmeal. I could not eat anything with orange flavouring with him.
With daughter, it was mushroom soup and donairs (a really gross meat and sweet sauce sandwich type thing). If I ate after 3pm, I was sick all night.
I could not stand the smell of any kind of meat with any of them. We ate alot of veggies. Also, with all three I needed drinks (water or pepsi) with as much ice as the glass could hold. The more, the better. That is the only thing I still do … that and the smell of meat still makes me ill.

Brocolli was my pregnancy’s crack of choice, strawberries for another and the last one I couldn’t eat much of anything at all so didn’t crave anything either.

No cravings although I probably ate more pickles than usual. Couldn’t drink alcohol at all (in those days it wasn’t the total ‘no no’ it is now) in either pregnancy and became slightly claustrophobic for some strange reason during my first. For the first 5 months of my first pregnancy I hated being in the admittedly very small kitchen of the house we had at the time, not a problem the second time but we had moved and the kitchen was bigger…
All of pregnancies have been different but this last one (#4) I wanted dried peaches, which was annoying cos we were living in London for most of it and I couldn’t get them. I think I bought about 3 packs as soon as the plane landed at home! Also during #4 I developed an aversion to the smell of mint flavoured things like toothpaste and gum. Both of these things have carried on.

Hmmmmmm….. Chocolate Paddle Pops like they were going out of production.
And anchovies.
But I knew I was pregnant (both times) when I couldn’t handle the smell of idea of white fish. Strange. I love it normally.
And when it’s my “time of the month”, I CRAVE white bread sandwiches with butter and Promite. Yum!

How funny I just had this conversation with my daughter the other day. Two of her favorite foods are dried pineapples and peanut butter and banana sammichs. The only time in my entire life that I have ever wanted either of these things is when I was preggers with her. In fact, the craving for the dried pineapple is when I knew I was pregnant before even peeing on a stick. It was midnight and I wanted dried pineapple so bad I made her daddy walk down to the store with me to get some. Odd thing too considering I was only about 4 weeks along at that time…I had cravings through out my entire pregnancy though…they would go in stages. Quisadillas, milkshakes, pepperchinis (sp)…careful with your calcium intake-my love of chocolate milk and cheese did me in during my 5th month and I got kidney stones! ugh

Last time when I was pregnant with Amy my one very strange craving was marmalade and sausage sandwiches. Otherwise I overdosed on fruit salad and also ate a lot of passionfruit sorbet ice lollies. This time round I have been so sick that I haven’t felt much like eating anything up until now but one out-of-character thing I have wanted is natural yogurt with lashings of dark brown sugar. I normally can’t eat yogurt unless its mixed into a smoothie, not a big fan! Now that I am feeling better my appetite is back and almost anything is appealing!

Those weird cravings are part of a type of anemia, I think. It’s called Pica. They’ll crave things such as chalk, paper, dirt, etc.
I think a craving like Vegemite (since you don’t usually like it) might be telling you your body is lacking something? Folic acid? Is that what it has? Vitamin B.
I had cravings for oranges…STRONG cravings.
I was also really repulsed by stuff. I think I had a problem with soda–at least for awhile. The worst though was smelly lotions. They bothered me so much–the worse were ones that were vanilla scented.
I love reading all the responses so far. Pregnancy is so mysterious!!

I don’t even need to buy pregnancy tests anymore. The second I get up in the middle of the night to make a triple layer peanut butter and jelly sandwich (heavy on the PB, light on the J) and chase it with a liter of milk, I know I’m incubating.
As it progresses, I go in waves of cottage cheese, hot dogs, beets, broccoli, mexican food, shrimp and crab. Like, that’s my WHOLE diet.

I’m glad you asked. I craved my wife would shut the hell up about her cravings. ….joke people, relax, I kid because the question was worded toward the woman.
Actually, she was big on peanut butter, which she would otherwise hate in her non-pregnant state.

Never been pregnant but i have noticed that teens have weird food combos as well, and being 18 one of my favorite is cold, yes I said cold, spaghetti-o’s and potato chips, or Wendy’s french fries and their chocolate frosty , or goldfish and chocolate pudding, lots of sweet and salty mixes, wheat thins and cream cheese, I have even been known to mix ketchup or A1 or Bar-BQ sauce with cream cheese on bread or into my mashed potatoes minus the cream cheese if in the potatoes, i have some pretty weird cravings I cam admit it.

Okay, I once looked after a lady who craved rubber. She would buy erasers and chew on them all day and sometimes she would get down on the ground to smell the rubber tyres on the cars. Even when she was in labour she had a bag of erasers to chew.
Me;
Immy and Maddy it was milk, it was milk and chocolate for Lily.
When I was pregnant with William, I had the biggest cravings out of all of my pregnancies.
Halepeno peppers whole and coffee. (I hate coffee and usually when I am pregnant it makes me sick) It was weird.
Ivy and Noah had me eating strawberries and capsicum.

I’m 27 weeks and so far no weird cravings. However, I do crave more salty foods than sweet. Which is new for me because I love chocolate!
First pregnancy-tomato sandwiches. Freshly bought bread, unsalted butter and freshly sliced tomatoes, sandwich eaten immediately. None of this 5 minute old food for this baby. Super fresh. She still prefers it that way.
Second pregnancy- fried onion sandwiches. Bread could be lightly toasted, but it had to be freshly sliced off the loaf. Thinly sliced onions, fried in butter, straight onto the freshly buttered bread (or toast), eat immediately. This child (heh, he’s 33) now loves his barbecues.
Third pregnancy-chocolate and other sweet stuff. She still loves it now.
Fourth pregnancy-don’t remember any cravings, I think I must have been too busy with the other 3 kids to notice. I probably ate everything in sight, since that is pretty much what he did and still does. Except pumpkin. He hates it.
*L* I can’t say that I necessarily craved anything, in fact it was more of a case of what can I eat and keep down for the first 5 months. At one point my GP told me ANYTHING. So believe it or not, anything was jam filled donuts and chocolate paddle pops. I think it was the starch in the former and the reminiscing to my childhood with the latter! *L*

LImes, limes and more limes! I think what I really wanted was a Margarita but limes were the substitute. Which, were quite difficult to find in mid winter. What is strange is that now my daughter craves tart things as well. If we have lemon with a fish dish she will just suck on the lemon as if it was candy. weird.
In my first trimester, (actually, the first 4 1/2 months of my pregnancy) I couldn’t eat anything. EVERYTHING tasted and smelled awful to me! EVERYTHING made me nauseous. However, as soon as I hit 5 months, I was craving everything spicy! I also couldn’t get enough strawberries or pineapple! One of the weirdest cravings I had was for sauerkraut. I ate an entire bowl full of that pickled cabbage stuff! LOL! My husband looked at me and said, “OMG…You really MUST be pregnant if you’re eating a bowl of sauerkraut and nothing else!” LOL! Meat and sweet things made me sick. This baby only wants healthy stuff. Darn! LOL! I’m a big choco-holic, but with this pregnancy, chocolate makes me really sick. Weird, eh?
P.S. What’s your profile name on NaBlo?

vinegar… I could have drunk the stuff….
Apart from that I wanted anything that tasted ok coming out as well as going in… definitely not potato chips! they are spiky coming out!
Tomato juice, which I never drank before and haven’t had since. I couldn’t believe how good it tasted and walked around with it constantly trying to convince other people to try it.

This time, I crave sweets, bloody red meat, and milk.

Like you, I never had any unusual cravings. I ate a lot of Carrosel (sp??) cookies. You know, those white and pink frosted cookies with the sprinkles on them? Anyway, I had those all the time, but I like them when I’m not pregnant too, I just don’t buy them.
My mom, however, used to crave rubber bands. Not to eat them. Just to bit on them. Isn’t that nasty? And weird??

My theory is that most of the healthy cravings are something your body probably needs, and many of the junk food cravings are because women are finally allowed to EAT! But nothing is cut and dried…except that you shouldn’t eat laundry powder. =)
I craved mustard on everything, and still can’t figure out what mustard has to offer me. But I totally ate grilled cheese sandwiches with mustard, salad with just mustard on it…
And I have to say, after the pregnancy went away, I’m still more fond of mustard than I was before I got pregnant. Not that I get cravings, per se. I just didn’t really ever care about it before, and now I like it. But not on my salad. =)
Pop Tarts. Lots and lots of Pop Tarts.

While I was pg with Zack I craved plain bigmacs. Nothing on them, just the burger in the bun. (Normally I can’t stand Maccy D’s), and while I was pg with Max it was Polo mints. I think that was a direct correlation between the amount of them I ate and the heartburn… they were the only thing that stopped it for me!

Not pregnant, but I often crave Barqs Red Cream Soda. Mmmmm.
My first pregnancy I ate pounds and pounds of raw potatoes… because it itched the “need to eat dirt”. Also ate TONS of Wendy’s french fries.
Second pregnancy I had an aversion to red meat (which I normally LOOOOVE) and I lived on orange juice smoothies and an occasional chocolate milk shake.

At the moment I have 2 cravings. One is vegemite and the other is chocolate milk. Have been drinking at least 2-3 glasses a day and eating vegemite on toast or crumpets. I also really enjoy eating healthy food and have trouble eating junk. I sat and stared at KFC meal the other night when usually I would get excited about having it as a treat. I wanted vegies.
