Good Reading

in Life

Yesterday I asked everyone what you wanted to hear me (see me?) talk about. Lulu asked about what books Amy likes to read and what I liked as a child.

At the moment, Amy is going through a horribly independent phase and I am NOT ALLOWED to read books to her on pain of toddler screams. All books must be read ALONE and away from everyone. She will bring a book to me if she wants me to validate something (‘Dis cat?’ ‘Yes, that is a cat’) for her, but that is it.

When I do get a chance to read to her (when she is feeling sooky, or tired) I have some favourites of hers as well.

This is a counting book by Graeme Base with various animals on each page. The best bit about it is that there are recurring frogs in every scene and there are generally hidden animals in the drawings as well. Amazing book, simply for it’s illustrations.

This book I think I bought more for me than for Amy. One of my best memories is Dad playing his guitar and singing Puff the Magic Dragon to me. Every chance I get, I make him sing it to Amy now.

Amy has a book of colours and this is her favourite page. Not because it is pink, (if anything red or orange would be her preferred colours) but because there is a ‘bablooooon!’ And ‘shoooos!’ on the page. I refuse to show the front cover because it is an American book and the title ‘Colours’ is spelt incorrectly. (For me)

It is a classic, but I still love it. Amy will sit more still for these stories than she does for others. Some days I can even get 2 or 3 pages read before she decides she wants to do it herself.

I think Amy loves this book so much because we sing it, rather than read it. It also has balloons and a dog to point out.

I can never resist Dr Seuss. Fox in Socks is my favourite along with The Lorax.

Our favourite part of the story is the end when all the tweetle beetles battle in a bottle with their paddles, and the bottles on a poodle and the poodles eating noodles….they call this a muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle. (Is it bad that I know that by heart?)

Amy giggles every time.

I couldn’t take a photo of Amy’s most favourite book though, because she is fast asleep cuddling it. That one is ‘Each, Peach, Pear, Plum’ and I love reading it. Very simple words and not a long story at all.

This was my favourite book when I was very little. I know now that Mum hated it and I reckon I probably made her read it twice a day. Sorry Mum.

When I was older I loved anything and everything by Enid Blyton, The Silver Brumby by Elyne Mitchell, The Chronicles of Narnia etc. You could generally always find me with my nose in a book.

Nowadays not that much has changed, except the amount of free time I have to do it in.

This is my bookshelf in the dining room.
1- Fiction. Nothing amazing.
2- James Herriots complete works. A couple of the Dune books.
3- More fiction. Marion Bradley, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Jackie Collins. Junk food for my brain.
4- Robert Jordon’s Wheel of Time Series.
5- Various new books. All fiction, all very good.
6- Sara Douglass. 2 of her trilogies. Great fantasy writer.
7- David Eddings. Lots of his books.
8- Christopher Paulini’s Eragon series. Trust me, the book is TONS better than the movie.
9- Robin Hobb. X4 of her trilogies. Great fantasy writer.
10- Amy’s books!
11- Cook books.
12- Angela’s Ashes and ‘Tis by Frank McCourt. Circle of Nine Trilogy by Josephine Pennicot and Dave Pelzer’s 3 books (‘A Child Called It’ is the first book).
13- John Marsden’s Tomorrow series and Ellie Chronicles.
14- DVD’s. Because I am not all literary and posh all the time.

And below is my bookshelf in the study.

I have 2 bookshelves in the study this size. Since I was able to put most of my books in the dining room, these bookshelves aren’t overflowing anymore. I used to have just as many books stacked in front of the shelves as were on them. Ooops.

Eventually I want to have my entire dining room with floor to ceiling bookshelves, just so I can stand in the middle of it and spin around.

I might just love books a little too much.

Thankyou Lulu, this was a great fun post to write. I enjoyed it.

Burgh Baby’s Mom? Barbara? And Susan? I will try and have your posts up in the next few days. Everyone else, you can feel free to suggest things you want to see me write about.

And to finish off, a pox on Telstra! A pox I tell you! They went out to my exchange, fiddled with my line, declared that there is a problem and decided that they don’t know when they are going to fix it.

Oh yes, they will fix it. Just not today. Or tomorrow. Or anytime that they can put a date on.

(The date on the computer systems? was November 10 2011. Yeah, I’m not going to wait that long)

I have to ring back on Friday to see if they know anything more. Until then, dialup all the way baby. Still.

As ‘American’ distinguishes itself from ‘English’ there are and will be more and more differences between them. That doesn’t mean there must be differences between US. We spell it ‘Colors’, you spell it ‘Colours’. So what? Don’t hide the cover of the book. Just put a ‘sticky note’ on the cover that says – This inexcusably titled book is American. That will be explanation enough for anyone, because everyone knows we’re arrogant bastards and we’ll spell stuff any darn way we please. Luv you.

it doesnt matter how things are spelt it should remind us of how diverse we really are an there is no reason to cover it up

Yay, great post! So happy you did it! I love the look of the puff the magic dragon book! Will have to check it out!

I am starting to collect books I want to read with my kids when I have then (Plus I have books in Australia I want to go through although mum gave most of the books we read before age 8 away to hospitals when we were in our teens) and I love hearing other peoples ideas and their kids favourites!

I am not sure what my favourite book as a kid was but I do know that I also loved the golden classics! I also remember liking Possum Magic (I bought this and another couple of stories featuring aussie animals for my school!)….I love some of the Japanese kids books they have also!!! Plus they are super cheap here and bookshops allow you to browse freely so I love to look through them!

My bookshelves are constantly overflowing! But I am having to get rid of a few now that I am going back to Australia for a year. I used to hoard my books but have gotten better at letting go!!!! I keep my favourites and also keep a few to send and give to my mum!

By the way I love John Marsden!!!

Oh since AMy is so independent with wanting to read by herself have you thought about buying books on tape or cd (Or taping your own voice reading them) so that she can entertain herself but still listen to the story!!!!

Yay, super great post!

Great post!

We’re in a Knuffle Bunny phase right now. Everybody has to read Knuffle Bunny at least three times each day, or nobody is going to bed. I’m not complaining, though, it’s better than the Elmo phase.

I love the Graeme Base books. I have Animalia, The Eleventh Hour and The Discovery Of Dragons. The illustrations are fantastic. Does Amy pick out the hidden animals? My grandchildren’s favourite Dr Suess was Oh, The Places You’ll Go! Many times when they were little we’d all be snuggled up in my bed, me reading it over and over, with a child on either side of me until they fell asleep. Have you read any by Kate Forsyth? She’s an Australian writer I believe, I have her Dragonclaw series. I also like Kathy Reichs, Patricia Cornwell, Nora Roberts and her other person J.D.Robb, for comedy I like Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes. Another Australian author I like is Gabrielle Lord. I’ve also read quite a few by James Lee Burke and one by his daughter Alafair burke. I’m currently reading a forensics story by Iris Johansen. I wasn’t read to as a child, not that I remember anyway, but I did read to my kids but probably not enough. They all read now though and E and S were read to from their first day home from hospital. Books are the best.

river April 3, 2008 at 5:47 pm

That should read “other persona”, it’s Nora Roberts writing as J.D.Robb.

OOh, yummy book post!!! I’ll have to come back and look some of these up and get my Amazon.com fix.

LOL: “tweetle beetles battle in a bottle with their paddles, and the bottles on a poodle and the poodles eating noodles….they call this a muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle.” AS I was reading that, I wondered if you had to grab the book to copy that down. You know it by heart? That’s funny. =) We don’t have that one, I’ll have to get it.

Love a book post, I think I may steal the idea!
That puff the magic dragon book looks gorgeous.
We had it on record and I would listen to it over and over, but always got sad at the end.:(

OMG. Mollie’s favourite book when she was really little was Pussy Willow. I hated it too!

I was a big fan of Dr Seuss as a kid. I passed this affection on to the Mol. My fave was ‘Hop on Pop’ but hers was defintitely ‘Cat in the Hat’.

I then went thru the Enid Blyton phase (and have brainwashed Mol), the Trixie Belden phase, the truly awful V C Andrews phase…and so on.

From about 20-30 I was in an ‘I will only read literature, thank you very much’ phase. Now I read anything and everything I can get my hands on. Chick lit is good at bedtime. I reckon I have ‘dabbled’ in most of your favourite authors at some point!!

This was a great post! We’re big Dr. Seuss fans in our house – those books are by far our favorites. Julia has the same Puff The Magic Dragon book as Amy (we love that one).

Julia is getting to the point now where she likes books that are longer and have more of a story. We read the full version of The Velveteen Rabbit a while back. I was so surprised when she sat and listened through the whole thing! Then, she had tons of questions – for days! Reading with her is getting more and more fun.
