I Can’t Cope Without A Nap!

outside-feb10th-025.JPG

Sleep.

You would think after my last posts about sleep that Amy had been sleeping better. (Aside from a brief foray back into Revolutionary mode that it)

You would be wrong.

She is still waking often overnight, although getting herself out of bed has become more common-place. It isn’t unusual for me to be woken up by toddler feet in my bedroom up to 4 times a night.

Hey, at least I get kisses too. Sometimes.

You know what sucks though? When she throws her bottle of water down the stairs. Then I have to go and rescue it before she will consent to laying back down.

Sigh.

However, that isn’t the crux of the problem. I can handle the night wakings. I am used to the night wakings.

You know what sucks? Today is the second day of no daytime naps.

I’m freaking out! She is only 17mths old! I was relying on day sleeps for at least another 6 mths!

Yesterday I thought it was because we had to go out. She refused to sleep early and then? DIDN’T SLEEP IN THE CAR! She ALWAYS sleeps in the car.

But yesterday she went right until bedtime (when we were still in the car) before having a nap.

Today was just as bad. I put her down at her regular time, with her regular routine and BAM she smacked me down by not going to sleep.

At all!

I was up and down those stairs 100 (okay, I might be exaggerating, but it was at least 50) times, resettling and re-laying her in her bed.

No good.

Eventually Nathan took her out with him so I could have a (sanity saving, much needed) break.

In the whole time they were gone (2 hrs, with a 35 minute drive each way) Amy had 5 minutes sleep.

And that only when they were 5 minutes from home! And she was 45mins away from bedtime anyway.

I am not ready to lose the day sleep.

It will be alright, right? It’s just a phase, right?

Shit.

Sure. It’s just a phase. *cough cough*

Hope she sleeps for you soon.

half the sleep battle is routine. My sis in law still makes her son lie down and have a rest (it’s up to him if he sleeps or not as long as he’s quiet) and he’s 4.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that it is just a phase and that you get afternoon sleeps back soon.

Zack doesn’t really have a nap anymore these days, but he has “chill out time” in his bed for around an hour once a day when naptime used to be. I’ll let him have a toy or (if he’s being really whiny) his gameboy and it gives us both a chance to recharge!

We, as parents, have always been told by ‘THEY SAY’, you know THEY SAY this and THEY SAY that, we’ve always been told that kids thrive on routine. Routine makes them feel comfortable and safe. The only problem is, THEY SAY never told the kids.

Just slip her some Benadryl, I won’t tell. 😉

Keep pushing the naps. A lot of parents give up on them if their child goes through a few days of resistance. But my 2.5 yo and my 4.5 yo both take a two hour nap every afternoon because I stuck with it. It can take them forever to fall asleep some days, like as much as two hours, while they play quietly in their beds. But they always fall asleep, and I stay sane. Mostly.

That’s one of the reasons why I work 🙂 I would not be sane if I stayed at home.

YES – it is just a phase!

Look to Delaney for sleep advise. She said she will start sleeping – she might be 3, but she will start sleeping.

Pfffttt. Naps? What are those. Noah just had was just in a state of PRE-PNEUMONIA and he barely napped at all.

My step-sister tells her kids: go lay down and sleep now. They go – lay down – and sleep. I believe she has made a pact with Satan.

sorry to burst your hope bubble but I don’t believe this is a phase. The daytime naps are gone. That girl just doesn’t need sleep. Keep encouraging quiet time though, maybe let her lie in bed or on the couch with some of her favourite books. Make a big deal out of a NEW, BIG GIRL rule. Tell her she’s not a baby anymore and this is what big girls do. Tell her this is quiet time and she can play again when the bell rings. Use an oven timer or something for this. Start with 5 minutes and gradually increase it until you find her limit. you may soon find that by not napping during the day her night sleep routine MAY improve. No guarantees though.

Oh I hope this is just a phase! I’m in agreement with the “resting time” although it may not mean a nap, it is a set time to just be quiet. Hopefully you will get some peace!

Oh my, I had one like that !!!! Never slept from day one until he was 4.

WGO is 2.5 and over the hot weather, none of us were sleeping that great. I was almost homicidal !!!!

Luckily, she is having an afternoon nap again, and she is now sleeping through the night. (which you probably don’t want to hear)

    Good luck.

Oh, dude. I feel your pain. Just this past week, Braden has been playing games with his naps. So far, he’s still going down for them, but it’s been taking forever, when he used to just go right out.

He better not be thinking what I’m thinking he’s thinking.
