More Advice

in Life

Just a little more advice for new mothers. Also, this bit serves as a TMI warning for my few male readers.

Unlike what ‘they’ say, even if you are exclusively breastfeeding, it is entirely possible to get your period back shortly after you give birth. Look at me, two kids, both exclusively breastfed. I got my period 7 weeks post partum with Amy and this time around my period arrived at almost 5 weeks post partum, complete with period pain and PMS.

(Sorry Nathan, obviously last week you weren’t being a horrible partner from hell, I was just being a bitch. You may have been correct when you said that me bursting into tears over nothing was hormones, you simply made the mistake of saying it where I could hear it. Welcome back to the world of PMS and tiptoeing.)

Not fucking fair.

Your first period post partum is not fun. It is heavy and clotty and crampy and HEAVY. And you know what is worse? If you haven’t yet had your 6 week check, you are stuck using fucking pads still. I swear, I’ve gone through more pads and underwear than I did in the first 2 days after Isaac was born. And considering today is day 5 of heavy bleeding, I think I can safely say that it will last longer than a normal period too.

Fuck it.

Are you and your mom almost twins or something? Your mom *just* posted. :]

I’m sorry you’re in hormone havoc land. That’s really hard when you don’t get enough sleep.

I shouldn’t read your advice to new mothers I am no where near ready for children and this and then talking to my mother has almost Almost scared me from not wanting to have kids, but hey at least I will know what to expect when I am ready.

Sorry about your hormones and pain and ruined underwear hun.

Ugh! on the heavy bleeding. our family have all been heavy bleeders for generations. Unfairly, my best friend in high school would have a light flow for three and a half days and then be back swimming. Meanwhile I’d be sitting on the grass, hot in my long pants, couldn’t wear a dress or shorts in case somebody could see, waiting for my seven days to be over. This was in the 60’s, before tampons.
Talina, breast feeding is definitely NOT a form of contraception. Several of my friends who thought so at the time had babies within a year. One girlfriend had a daughter only 20 days after her firstborn son was 9 months old.

Janet B February 25, 2009 at 4:54 pm

You poor dear! I can’t think of anything worse! I have started the menopause story – only one good thing about that – LIGHT periods – hallelujah!

Hormones are a bitch – why do men think that pointing this out will be helpful? Like you’re going to respond with ‘Gee, honey, thanks for pointing that out. I’ll be super sweet and happy now’.

And yet every month, they point it out. Poor, poor souls.

Ohhhh crap. Doesnt sound good. Must stock up on extra pads and extra undies, thanks for reminding me 🙂

Nathan would know what was going on, at least he will know by now if he didn’t!

My Nathan also blames hormones, sometimes I am angry for real and he has pissed me off for real but at least he will back off then.

badness jones February 25, 2009 at 11:51 pm

That sucks hon. I hope that they get better…. I didn’t get my period back for over 18 months with Bad (don’t hit me! I nursed him at least every 4 hours, day and night, that long too!) but since I have gotten them back, they’re longer and heavier and crampier than they’ve ever been in my life. Before I had kids it was 2 days of no big deal, and now I feel like I’m bleeding out every single month. Bah.

In my experience with #2, I stopped bleeding around 4 or 5 weeks, then started back for about a week. It was just lochia – it took forever for it to go away! So I hope for your sake that maybe this is just the rest of your lochia, and that your period won’t start back for a little while. That does bite!

hi, sorry to hear you are going through this absolute inconvenience that heavy bleeding (and clotting and doubled over with pain cramping) is!! I had a fibroid in my uterus which was apparently contributing to my heavy bleeding (and clotting and doubled over with pain cramping) which I endured for almost 2 years with every period, post birth of my last baby two years ago. I thought it was all due my age (45+). I did not experience anything like it after the birth of my 2 sons, when aged in my twenties. Anyway, i recently had a procedure to have the fibroid removed, and a Mirena inserted to assist the reduction of heavy bleeding. Sorry to sound like I am giving advice, but have you seen a gynaecologist/obstetrician to check if everything is ok. And, if I am completely off track here, apologies again. LOL.

Yeah, that happened to me… I wasn’t too surprised though since I am extremely regular. It did kind of suck to be wearing pads for like 7 weeks straight though! And boo to the birth control. My best friend hasn’t had a period in like 5 years… and she has 4 kids!
