Red and yellow paint, and stolen seedlings.

in Evelyn, Headfuck

Today I painted our kitchen cupboards.

Tomorrow I will do a final coat, before I paint the trim red.

The lady at K&D yesterday looked at me a touch strangely as I bought red and yellow paint together, remarking to Nathan “but it’s what she wants and what she wants, she gets!” She was joking, but I didn’t feel like explaining that my choice of new paint was steered by colours my baby daughter is likely to be able to see. That rather than painting the kitchen black and white, I was going for red and yellow. High contrast colours, you know? And if Evie’s sight improves, well then, at least I’ll have a bright and cheery kitchen.

Mock me all you like, but I’m rather a fan of the yellow at the moment.

This morning I discovered that one of my children had drowned the new seedlings that I was trying to start in the greenhouse, and that rats (I think) had stolen the seeds and seedlings out of some pots and grow bags. It seemed like a particularly cruel thing, especially as I’d already had to replant everything twice after the chooks got in and ate them the first time. Nathan fixed the door after the chook debacle, and yet, here we are again, seedling-less.

I’m tempted to lock a cat in the greenhouse over night and just deal with them plotting my demise. I mean, I’m pretty sure the tom-cat is plotting my death anyway, locking him up for a night can’t make him any more likely to kill me, right? Plus, this is why we have cats, so that they can do their jobs and de-rodent our paddock.

Aside from that, everything continues on as normal. Evie is still seizing, sleeping all day and not hitting any milestones or seeing very much.

How are you Internet? Have I missed anything major in your life?

Well I like the yellow and am looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Am having similar seedling disasters. What with chooks, hubs + whipper snipper, and my own shameful neglect I keep ending up with stumps in pots. Sigh. Go with the cat, or bait maybe? I know its not very kind, but we got to the point where we had to bait. The rodents had taken over the roof and the smell of pee was appalling.

Hugs for Miss Evie from all of us up here 🙂

Other than that, not much news here in sunny Sydney, well aside from the pantry moth who dived down my cleavage (probably after crumbs) and died of suffocation. Oh and I took the kids horse riding, and OH NOES they are entranced. Now my purchase of a 4WD that can pull a horse box (8 years ago when I was only just pregnant) is JUSTIFIED!! (Yes, I may be getting ahead of myself here, but I want a pony :))

Oh I love the yellow too! Nice work!

The seedlings in my hothouse were eaten last night too : ( So cruel.

Don’t you just love how some people have to have an opinion on everything? It’s not her kitchen. I’m a bit of a purple nut myself, wardrobe is full of it, I’m surrounded by purple stationary, my Kindle cover, my phone… Sometimes when I get dressed in the morning I admit I look in the mirror and think I look a bit like a bruise… but a pretty bruise, so there.

My first born loved blue for the longest time. We were really tempted to paint her cot/cieling to get her to sleep better! Or at least lay there happilly looking at it instead of giving mummy and daddy grief.

I love your yellow, it’s so bright and sunny! Can’t wait to see the finished kitchen.
It’s possible your seedlings are being decimated by slugs and/or snails. They can munch through quite a few without leaving a trace and if they’re hiding during the day you’ll never know they’re there.

love the yellow – dying to see it with red!

when my son was having his early intervention sessions for his eyes, they told me i should “overdo it on the makeup a little” when we were playing at home. clearly they have NO idea of the sahm life (well, MY sahm life anyway!) – makeup?!?!? i vaguely remember having some…em…here somewhere…!!!

so i googled and questioned those in the know, and ended up with an even better (certainly more fun) idea – use facepaints. the idea is to really highlight facial features – so i used to do LOVELY black eyebrows, whoretastic red lips, cheeks to match….whatever i fancied really. could be a lot of fun for your older 2, and it definitely gave my son the hints he needed on where to start re looking at my face, making eye contact etc.

happy makeup-ing!

Not missing anything. I love your new kitchen colour scheme x

God forbid Evie’s sight does not improve. But I find myself more and more grateful for your indoor toilet. I’m so glad that is done. I’m thinking Mexican art has a very similar colour scheme to your kitchen. Always bright and cheerful. 🙂

Yellow ftw! Sorry to hear how tough things still are, sending love, hugs etc across the world to you all. I asked BendyCat about your greenhouse plan, being a spoilt house cat she was horrified by such treatment and reminded me of the awkward time when as a young cat she got locked in someone else’s flat for several days….just after they had had all new carpets fitted! A greenhouse with plenty of drinking water sounds like luxury compared to her experience 😉
Things are really hectic here with all the politics stuff, but its going well and making progress. I think about you all every day though & wish I was close enough to come give you a big hug BG Xx

I love colourful kitchens whatever works for you – Ok
I’ve been thinking of you and Evie – wish they had some answers for you . How frustrating to not know about Evie’s vision and why she is still seizing.

Sorry about the seedlings – The cows ate my seedlings and pushed the fence over completely when my hub wasn’t here to do anything to fix it or for me to rant at him – I only have a few seedlings left.

I found you through Bad Mommy Moments and when I read your story I couldn’t just pass on by. My daughter (now 4 years old) had a benign seizure disorder from birth and reading what you’ve gone through brought me back so clearly and viscerally to those early days that my heart started to ache. It was horrible. She started twitching and seizing in her sleep the day after she was born and we were taken by ambulance to Emergency where they just took so much blood, but all they could find was mild jaundice. We also went through multiple EEGs and MRIs and two lumbar punctures (one failed, one successful) and so, so many heel pricks on my tiny baby girl. We were in hospital for a week after a traumatic birth and she was under the bilirubin lamp for the first two days. I want to reach through the screen and give you a giant hug. I remember crying and wondering why this was happening and why I couldn’t just have a healthy baby. It all felt so wrong. But time did give us our happy ending in that my daughter outgrew the seizures by 3 months (but she was born on her due date) and is a normally developing child now. Doctors attributed the seizures to an immature nervous system that just took time to sort out. I pray that your Evie is the same. Sending love to your family.

Wow, fascinating to read Joyce’s story above, and praying that it’s the same scenario for Evie.

And love, love, love the yellow cabinets. If I wasn’t renting, I would love to use that colour yellow in my home – it is so bright and cheerful and just lifts the spirits.

I love the yellow. I love that you are doing this for her xx

Totally loving the yellow. Very bright and cheery, it just makes you want to smile. It looks great! 🙂

Thinking of you all and most of all your adorable little girl, and hoping and praying that her sight gets better eventually.

Oh no, the poor seedlings! Hopefully you can get some more growing. xo
