This gluten challenge is killing me

Bleurgh. This gluten challenge has sucked all the energy out of me. Amy has been …. a nightmare.

Case in point:

I baked the test wedding cake this weekend. Leveled the layers, wrapped them and left them on the bench. I also left the levelled bits wrapped on top of everything. I’d made lemon curd for the filling, straining eggs, stirring for ages and finally straining and cooling.

So when I woke up to tears and tantrums at 5.50am and stumbled out to the lounge room, only to discover that the tantrums were over the fact she couldn’t carry the bowl of lemon curd back to bed with her, I was a little upset.

There were also cake crumbs all over the house and lemon curd all over the floor and just ugh. She’d also stirred greek dressing into the curd and well, we’re just not thinking about that. (I couldn’t taste it after I strained it again and gave it a good stir. We’ll just ignore that fact.)

I nearly cried.

She tipped pine-o-clean on Isaac, she’s been racing to do things FASTER as I yell NO! and run for her and just ohmigod.

OhMYgod.

I’m ready to be done.

I feel like I’ve had all the energy sucked right out of me. Shhhhhlrp. Gone.

On the upside, the blood test is on Friday and Thursday will be the last day of gluten.

So um yeah, WOO HOO!

Wow. At least the flooring is done. I hope you are able to get Amy outside for a bit each day. It has to be hard for her as well as you. Hugs!!

Taz October 19, 2009 at 11:57 pm

sarah October 20, 2009 at 12:05 am

It sounds like hell, but all I can think of is how lucky you are that she didn’t get the lemon curd back to bed!

Bendy Girl October 20, 2009 at 1:00 am

Roll on friday! Have you decided what you’ll do if Amy doesn’t test positive for celiac? I personally just stick to gluten free anyway, but I’ve wondered for a while if there’s something to the EDS/gluten issue rather than it being celiac.
Whatever it is, I bet you’re counting down the minutes! Good luck, it’ll all be better by this time next week, BG Xxx

kys October 20, 2009 at 1:02 am

Oh no! Hang in there – Thurday will be here soon.

PS Lemon curd? Yum! I would be wanting to take it to bed with me too.

Gina October 20, 2009 at 1:25 am

I amm praying that Friday comes quickly!!!!

Kat October 20, 2009 at 1:33 am

Ugh. Only a few more days now.

Miss Ash October 20, 2009 at 1:34 am

Only a few more days!!!!

Marylin October 20, 2009 at 1:58 am

Oh thank god it’s almost over for you! Never again after this.

Sending ((hugs)) and a stiff drink for you. xx

anne nahm October 20, 2009 at 2:58 am

Ugh. Sounds miserable. Hugs.

Xbox4NappyRash October 20, 2009 at 4:06 am

Are you sure you haven’t been confusing gluten with heroin?

BubbleGirl October 20, 2009 at 4:43 am

@BendyGirl- There have been studies that show a lot of people with EDS also have gastrointestinal issues, and a higher prevalence of food allergies. I am allergic to most foods, but they aren’t really bad allergies, it just keeps me at an almost constant state of feeling under the weather.

Veronica, GOOD LUCK!

Barbara October 20, 2009 at 6:49 am

Oh love, roll on Friday. It will be ok. Only a few more days and you’ll be there. ((((hugs)))).

tiff October 20, 2009 at 8:11 am

I’m wishing the days away for you.
Friday can’t come soon enough.

Hang in there.

frogpondsrock October 20, 2009 at 8:23 am

mmm sweetheart you forgot to mention the banshee shrieks..

@XBOX heroin would just make her sleepy and biddable I think you meant amphetamines they make you very naughty. Not that I would know anything about that of course.

Tanya October 20, 2009 at 8:38 am

Oh geez, girl. I’m still amazed at the idea that this is caused by gluten. I remember seeing a segment on one of those current affair shows and they were talking about changing the diets of unruly children and how they had changed overnight. I thought it was just eliminating junk food, to which I said ‘Duh’. Food has a lot of power in our lives, I’m about to fill myself with a few cups of tea because I have the CBF’s today. Bring on Friday, just hang in there!

Jayne October 20, 2009 at 10:24 am

Good luck, thinking of you.

Ree October 20, 2009 at 10:51 am

Friday. Friday. Friday. Only 3 more days for you, right? You can do it. 😉

Ali October 20, 2009 at 11:21 am

Oh god. Roll on Thursday. Look on the bright side. At least you know what has been causing Amy’s behaviour. I just think about all those poor kids who get labelled as “difficult” or worse ADHD or something and get drugged to their eyeballs. Amy is going to be fine so yay for that.

Fiona October 20, 2009 at 11:36 am

Does “intolerance” as opposed to “allergy” show up on the tests you are having done?

Also – is it like some allergies which can improve significantly if you avoid the trigger for a significant period of time? If you cut it out completely for now, things might be much improved in six months or a year’s time (I’m just thinking it would be easier for you if eventually, you can pack a sandwich for school lunch!)

Kath October 20, 2009 at 12:27 pm

Three more sleeps. THREE MORE SLEEPS.

THREE — MORE — SLEEPS —- !!!

Sharnee October 20, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Oh lordy, glad it over soon.
Do you get the results instantly – is it like pouring holy water on a vampire? will she writhe like crazy and they’ll go “yup, that’s it” (not vampirism but gluten intolerance I mean). Well I guess she could also be a vampire. Maybe the sunlight is doing it 😉

Joyce-Anne October 20, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Hang in there V! You can do it. I will pray that Friday will come soonest for you.

Veronica October 20, 2009 at 1:34 pm

Fiona – If it’s an allergy, yes, it may improve. If it’s Coeliacs, then no, she has it for life.

An intolerance won’t show on the tests, no, but we know she is intolerant from her behaviour. She may well grow out an intolerance too, but with the Ehlers Danlos and it’s high prevalence of associated food issues I doubt it.

But who knows!

Veronica October 20, 2009 at 1:34 pm

Sharnee – No, it will take a few weeks for the results to come back. So ugh.

Veronica October 20, 2009 at 1:40 pm

@ Bendy Girl

If she doesn’t test positive, we’ll just assume it’s a bad intolerance and keep her gluten free anyway. Maybe we’ll try gluten once a year to see if she grows out of it, but with the EDS, I’m not holding my breath for it going away.

river October 20, 2009 at 4:52 pm

I’m echoing everybody above me, roll on Friday and no more gluten! Tuesday is almost over now, so really only two days to go……..

jean October 21, 2009 at 4:35 am

I have to second everyone here, Friday can’t come quick enough.

Hyphen Mama October 21, 2009 at 7:04 am

You get my vote for sainthood! She’ll be back to her gluten free angel state by the weekend?!? Ohthankgod.

Darnonymous October 22, 2009 at 7:55 am

Oh man, all that work with the cake! Hey, at least you know it’s tasty for Amy to want to take it to bed with her!
Totally feeling for you, but it must be about last day now (since I am such a behind-the-8-ball commentor)!!!!!!
Good luck with the test.

river October 22, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Today is the last gluten day. Hooray! Hooray!

Is your lemon curd recipe posted anywhere? Is your recipe blog still going? I can’t find a link to it….

Jennie October 23, 2009 at 3:02 am

And to think that used to be your every day. Hang in there!
