Ducklings!

On Sunday, we had ducklings hatch.

On Monday, the mother duck left the nest long enough for me to photograph and count the babies.

However, after 3 minutes moving ducklings and counting heads, I was no closer to an exact number.

We have twelve. Or thirteen. I can’t quite tell, because of all the sitting on each other, hiding under their siblings and wiggling to the bottom of the pile they were doing. I can tell you they are very cute and very soft.

I did only find 2 rotten eggs though and we started with 15 (16, but she broke one during week 3), so thirteen is a possibility.

12 (or 13) ducklings out of 15 eggs is a brilliant success rate. I am thrilled.

Update: We have thirteen. My god it’s a lot of ducklings.

More gratuitous photos, because surely there is no such thing as too many duckling photos?

Marita September 16, 2010 at 7:20 am

OMG they are so adorable. I have to stop everything and go get Heidi right now. She loves ducks.

Marita September 16, 2010 at 7:24 am

Heidi says

“Oh der cute, oh so cute. Can I have one? I wish I had a pet like ducklings or giraffes. Oh der so quenee*”

*quenee – cross between cute (que) and tiny (nee) – Heidi’s go to word when she see’s little things that are very cute.

Farmers Wifey September 16, 2010 at 7:34 am

These pics make me 100 percent happy that I post various photos of our guinea fowl babies….hey wanna do a poultry swap???

amandab September 16, 2010 at 7:54 am

That is too cute!

Melissa September 16, 2010 at 7:56 am

OMG the cuteness! My boys are gushing. I’m squealing. I realise that I’m a grown woman, but did I mention the cuteness?

I don’t suppose you live in Brisbane?

taz September 16, 2010 at 8:13 am

aww

there the cutest..

Veronica September 16, 2010 at 8:50 am

Marita – Heidi just made my morning 🙂

Farmers Wifey – If you were in Tassie, definitely, but I think the logistics of swapping animals across the Strait might make it hard hehe.

Melissa – nope, sorry, I’m in Tassie. Cold old Tassie.

Jayne September 16, 2010 at 9:07 am

Awww, so sweet and fluffy!
I won’t share with Hubby cos he wants ducks BADLY and I fear these photos will only feed his addiction lol.

Veronica September 16, 2010 at 9:34 am

Jayne they’d definitely feed my addiction if I didn’t have ducks. Best to keep him away. Hehehe.

achelois September 16, 2010 at 10:34 am

A merchandising opportunity in second to last photo – cutastic !

Veronica September 16, 2010 at 10:36 am

I know, I’m seriously thinking of taking a bunch more photos and getting 1 printed for Amy’s wall. Everyone needs ducklings on their wall, right?

Tamsyn September 16, 2010 at 11:55 am

Oh my goodness, they are seriously cute! I am so jealous that you got to touch them and count them. Probably I good thing it wasn’t me though, I wouldn’t have been able to put them back down. Adorable!

Super Sarah September 16, 2010 at 12:51 pm

oh my goodness, those ducklings are just toooooo gorgeous!

sharon September 16, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Now this is not a word I use often but, my goodness, they really are so CUTE! And the printing idea is brilliant, I’m sure you could sell some too.

Jane September 16, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Too cute for words!

I’ve just seen that Tassie is having the coldest day for decades. Hope the fluffy yellow ones are snuggled up warmly under mum.

Just think how good they’ll taste!

river September 16, 2010 at 1:50 pm

I have the biggest smile on my face from looking at these pictures. They’re just too cute for words. I agree with the others, those photos are very sellable. Umm, that would be saleable.

katef September 16, 2010 at 3:21 pm

oh my!!!! Look at all that yellow fluffy gorgeousness!!!!!!!!

Veronica September 16, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Tamsyn – it was really hard not to handle them too much in the first few days, I really didn’t want them imprinting to me!

Sarah – I should have put a warning up, yes?

Sharon – I don’t use cute much either, but I nearly squealed it out loud when I got my first proper look at them. They are SO cute.

Jane – I just had to go and bring inside wood, it is so cold my hands were numb in a minute or so. SO cold. It’s snowing outside at the moment. The ducklings are hiding inside the chook shed underneath their mother, so I think they’re okay.

River – now there is an idea…. if it warms up enough to take more photos…

Kate – I know! SO FLUFFY!

Sam (Sippies71) September 16, 2010 at 6:24 pm

They are so cute! My daughter now wants one.

Veronica September 16, 2010 at 6:33 pm

Sam – would you believe, my daughter won’t go see them? Our rooster attacked her and she won’t leave the small yard anymore. Sigh.

BendyGirl September 16, 2010 at 7:46 pm

Marie September 16, 2010 at 10:55 pm

ck September 17, 2010 at 8:48 pm

More gratuitous duckling shots, please! There is never enough of adorable baby animals. And these photographs are gorgeous.

Kristin (Wanderlust) September 18, 2010 at 2:10 am

Want!

rachael September 18, 2010 at 5:35 am

They’re beautiful.

jean September 18, 2010 at 10:38 am

Please forgive this city girls ignorance but why are they so different from their mom? They are so cute and yellow and she is, um, not so cute or even yellow.

Veronica September 18, 2010 at 10:48 am

Jean- That’s okay! All white poultry are born yellow and fluffy. They’ll get their feathers in a few months (or weeks, I forget how fast muscovy ducks develop) and then when they’re about 10 months old, they’ll start to get the red leather on their face.

Laura September 19, 2010 at 3:49 pm

These are gorgeous 🙂

Kelly September 22, 2010 at 10:46 am

Nice!!
