Early Mornings.

in Life

‘Mummy! I am AWAKE!’

‘Mmmmphghs. fuck.’

Stumble stumble stumble. I glance at my watch. Ugh.

‘Amy. It’s still dark. Do you want to go back to sleep for me please?’

‘No. Amy is awake. We go in the loungeroom and watch TV!’

‘Ugh. Move over. Mum will cuddle you. Brrrr, it’s cold. Here, snuggle down and close your eyes.’

I climb into bed with Amy and close my eyes.

‘Amy does not want to close her eyes. Amy is awake. Hi MUMMY!’

‘Hi Amy. Here, come and have a cuddle.’

‘Okay. Incy wincy spider…. You sing it Mum.’

‘Mummy doesn’t want to sing. Mummy wants to go back to sleep.’

Amy walks her fingers up my head.

‘MUM! MUM! There is a spider on your head. See?’

Her fingers walk back down my face.

‘Amy, it’s not time to get up yet. Snuggle down and go back to sleep.’

‘But Amy is not tired.’

‘Mummy is tired.’

‘Are you tired Mum? Are you tired? Mum, mummummumumummm, are you tired?’

‘Yes Amy, I am tired.’

‘You going back to sweep Mum?’

‘MMmmrpgh.’

‘MUM! Are you sweeping?’

‘Mmmmmm.’

‘Is okay Mummy, Amy will sing. Incy Wincy Spider climbed up a… Mummy, is your turn now.’

‘Amy?’

‘Yes? Oh NO. MUMMY LOOK! There is a cat on Amy’s drawers. Don worry Mum, Amy fix it.’

‘Amy, get back here, what are you – DON’T put the cat in the drawer!’

‘Is okay Mummy, Amy come snuggle now. Cat is fixed.’

‘Go and get the cat back out of the drawer. It’s very naughty to put the cat in the drawers!’

‘Amy not get the cat out. The cat is sweeping.’ [makes snoring noises]

‘The cat is not sleeping, go and get it out.’

‘Amy not want to. Cat is sweeping. Amy is sweeping.’ [Makes more fake snoring noises.]

‘BING! Amy is AWAKE! C’mon Mummy, les get UP!’

Oh my god.

‘Come on then. Let’s get up.’

‘YAY! YAY! YAY! Is Isaac awake?’

‘No, Isaac is sleeping.’

‘Don worry Mummy, Amy will wake Isaac up.’

‘No! Leave Isaac alone!’

‘Isaac! Is time to wake up!’

Isaac cries, Nathan mumbles and I am UP! and AWAKE! with the kids at a godawful time. Is it too late to start today again?

Pop and Ice July 10, 2009 at 10:37 am

Ha! Another kid who puts the cat in the drawer! One of our cats spent all day in a closed drawer because our son forgot to reopen the drawer before he left for school. Sheesh.

Thankfully, my kids were never early risers. Or else they learned early NEVER to bother Mommy before 8am, at least on weekends anyway. All the other days I had to wake them up for daycare or school, so I can confidently say my kids were NEVER morning people!

I have one of those.

Sorry mummy, I can’t go to sleep, I’m bored was what I got this evening. Shortly before she started shouting so loudly that the boy woke up.

Every morning we try to get them to relax in our bed and inevitably (sp?) end up with two over-excited children in the bed. It’s not what I expected.

I remember one morning, Wynnie was around 3, when she would stand at my doorway and cough cough cough until I woke up. That morning I had HAD ENOUGH. I stomped her back to her room, threatened her with a severe beating if she EVER WOKE MOMMY AGAIN. She is such a sweet pea now, she’ll play in her room, quietly opening her door occasionally to see if anybody else is stirring. I’m afraid I’ll have to resort to something similar very soon with her brother. UGH!

You totally need all the sleep you can to heal on so many levels. I think at this time your health has to take priority. She’s an extremely strong-willed child. Perhaps she needs some firm boundaries. I used to say ‘This is the rule’ and they bought it, so I guess I was lucky, but I put wicked inflection on rule.
Somehow I don’t think Amy will be a one-off, and you’ll have to endure hissyfits consistently until she realizes there’s no point to the hissyfits. Then she’ll stop. I don’t envy you your challenges, they are Wonder Woman big. I do so admire your spirit, as you keep on keeping on.
You and your family are in my heart.

Best is when I fall asleep on the couch & wake up with a little finger prodding my eye & a little voice saying “Mummy sleeeeeeepi????”
Such a delightful way to be jolted back into consciousness……

Amy needs to learn the number one rule.
NEVER wake a sleeping baby. (Because then mummy can’t spend time with Amy).

Jenni July 10, 2009 at 12:16 pm

oh, god. why are they so AWAKE! when they wake up? why do toddlers think it is there job to wake their siblings?

There is nothing more startling than “Mummy, I’m awake NOW!!” Being screamed through the baby monitor at some ridiculously early time of the morning! Great way to start the day =)

Mine do that.
Just wait until Isaac is telling you about trains and tractors and how his daddy can fly any aeroplane in the whole world. At the top of his lungs.
At 2am.
Oh yes.
He will.

Perhaps if you explain to her that people, especially grown up people, need sleep – that if they don’t get proper sleep, they could get sick – and sick people are not FUN people – maybe that will help.

Could’ve been bunking in the same place for the way I’ve been woken the last, well, let’s not go into how long I’ve been in control of neither end of my sleep.

Perhaps it’s fitting that I hail from badmommymoments, but I “trained” my daughter at age 3.5 to stay in bed until 7-0-0 with marshmallows.

If sleeping like a human is wrong, than I don’t wanna to be right…

Hey V…peace and strength…and sleep too if I can arrange it for you πŸ™‚ Do try the ‘boundaries’ idea…I had to do it with number one child as well….

Rachael July 12, 2009 at 10:12 pm

3am last week; ‘Mum! I haffa have a jam sandwich NOW!’

3am this week: ‘Mum! Please I haffa watch MASTERCHEF!’

It’s so cute in the telling later, but that’s small comfort in the wee hours.

In the meantime, I hope you get to have a little break from time to time. May your mornings not all be so early! xo
