It Might Be Hormones…

by Veronica on July 15, 2008

in Pregnant. Finally.

It might just be hormones, but lately anything that doesn’t go right makes me want to kill things (think Nathan looked at me funny, Amy broke ALL her egg cups, my site wouldn’t load, I can’t get wordpress to upgrade etc etc.) or cry. OR maybe it is the fact that no matter how much I sleep I still feel like sleeping (does exhaustion make you want to cry too?).

Heh.

I was looking forwards to the end of my first trimester; banking on increased energy and lack of nausea. The nausea seems to be easing (although I still feel a little off) but my energy levels? Are dropping fast. Apparently growing a whole other human being while looking after a toddler is more exhausting than I anticipated.

I also have the problem that all food looks…. kinda gross. I can’t be bothered cooking for myself and when I do cook for everyone else, I can’t bring myself to eat it. Meat makes me want to retch, toast is okay sometimes and anything with fat just makes me nauseous.

I can eat fruit (just not banana’s) and I can eat salad (as long as it has a vinegar based dressing). Vegies are out (*shudder*) except for very very small portions of roast potato.

I guess the only thing I can think of is to juice my own fruit and live on it, but I don’t have a juicer. Milk is okay and I have been feeling like cereal (I think because of the milk factor), but I am feeling like I am not eating enough.

I am definitely still losing weight too and that worries me. I know that if I lose weight I will end up sick again and I really don’t want that to happen.

So I am asking for food tips. What foods can you eat when nothing else looks good? What foods worked for you when you were pregnant? What foods work when you are hung over?

What can I eat that will add more calories and stuff to my diet without making me want to retch.

Help!

If it makes you feel any better, I was sick as a dog for both my pregnancies. I puked for 5 months. I lost 10 lbs. with my first pregnancy, and 1 with my second. But, unlike you, I was/am a big girl. Here’s what got me through:

Pop Tarts
Sugar Cereal
Ice cream
Chocolate Milk
Milkshakes

Unfortunately, all unhealthy stuff. But, I couldn’t keep anything down. The docs told me to eat whatever I could. I, too, couldn’t do veggies or meat. I hope it gets better for you. When I was pregnant the 2nd time around, my daughter who was 2 at the time would mimic my vomiting in her play kitchen (in the sink). I was so worried that I scarred her for life, but it all worked out ok. πŸ™‚
Thinking about you, sending good thoughts!

Baked potatoes with cheese. It’s the only thing keeping me sane. I can eat meat. I just can’t cook it. Bleeech.

Avocados are one of the most easily digested foods and they contain damn near everything that you need.

I will buy you some avocados tomorrow xxx mum (if you want)

Oh and BTW can you please thank all your commenters on your previous post, some of those comments really helped me as well.. xxx

Do you want me to make you some soup?

The end of the first trimester is the worst part. Getting through all that nausea takes a lot of stamina, and by that 12 week point it’s just harder and harder to fight. The 2nd trimester was the sleepiest for me with #2, this time it’s the 3rd. I have to nap every day now.

I worked my way back into food with bland but healthy stuff. Like celery with peanut butter, plain buttered toast, boiled eggs, chicken salad sandwiches. And I ate small meals throughout the day rather than sitting and tackling enormous portions with everyone else. So might have a half a piece of toast at breakfast, a boiled egg an hour later, a cup of cereal an hour after that, etc. Eventually I was able to work myself back into a normal appetite.

I went through this and each time it was completely different foods that I lived on.

First: toast and fruit and fruit on toast
Second: hamburgers. and I was a vegetarian.
Third: Indian food. The spicier the better and everything else just made my stomach churn…so weird.

Oh, and guess what? My first born loves fruit and toast, my second is a complete carnivore and my third loves spicy foods. Hmmmmm…

Avoid pizza!! Seven years later I am still haunted by the memory of regurgitating barely digested pizza during my first pregnancy.

Yoghurt worked well for me

I AM IN THE EXACT SAME BOAT! AGG!

Things that appeal to me:

-soft bread with creamy peanut butter slathered on it.

Aaaaaand that’s about it. It’s got protein and carbs and helps ease my troubled tummy. Milk is good too.

And, no, I’m not entirely sick of the ‘you must be having twins!’ comments just yet because I am asking myself that same question all day everyday anyways. hehe. Hopefully it will all be settled for me by Thursday!

Love the blog!!

Well, I don’t know how much help it will be for you, but my hangover remedies include a quarter of a lime (or half a lemon), deep fried onion rings, salty soup, and a flagon of cider.

My memories of being pregnant are so vague – and of course, SWMBO was having a sympathy pregnancy at the time – she actually spent time in the hospital on IV’s for hydration – that’s how bad she had it!! But then it cleared up and she went on to have a healthy and happy baby while I, on the other hand, suffered on. Women!! You don’t KNOW how good you have it.

If you’re still feeling totally exhausted it could be that you’re not getting enough iron? Your doctor should be able to give you supplements for that to help out since you can’t eat much at the moment.

You’re going to have about the same age difference as I had with my 2 – it’s bloody difficult isn’t it?

Give yourself another month and you’ll probably start feeling a little better πŸ˜‰

((hugs))

You ought to make sure you’re getting in enough protein… I drank protein shakes to help with that, and no matter how nauseus I was I could always eat hard boiled eggs for some reason. And peanut butter!

I hope it gets better for you soon!

Not much help from me; for both pregnancies I ate and ate and ate (and I wonder why I gained so much; hmpff!)

I did use ginger tea whenever I felt nauseous though; I wonder if anything with some ginger in it might help. I used to eat a boiled egg almost every day … Kat reminded me of that!

I lived on orange juice smoothies for weeks (and gained 60 pounds!!). Saltine crackers. Pop tarts. Raw potatoes (I think it was the craving for dirt that those filled). Bread. Bread. Bread. Toast with peanut butter and honey (excellent way to gain weight).

Sorry if any of these made you want to retch.

Sharon July 16, 2008 at 3:05 pm

How about those milkshakes that are formulated as slimmers meals? Maybe 2 or 3 of those a day plus anything else you can manage to keep down will help? Other than that make some fruit smoothies with cream as well as milk, have Vegemite on toast for B vitamins. Just keep trying little and often. I only weighed 57Kgs at 43 weeks (don’t ask!) with my first and he came out at just over 3 kgs. πŸ™‚

I have lived on macaroni and cheese through my first pregnancy and my current one. Love it. Can’t get enough. Cereal is big for me, too. Life Cereal has a phenomenal number of vitamins and minerals. I also mix Grape Nuts with strawberry yogurt instead of milk, and that’s yummy. Hmmm… pancakes. Ritz crackers with peanut butter. Oh, and prenatal vitamins.

Like you, I can’t tolerate veggies at all, and even lettuce grosses me out. This baby is just going to have to deal with that until my third trimester. That’s when my weird food issues disappeared last time.

Good luck!!

Pity about the bananas, they’re a great fruit, one of my favourites.Just keep eating all the other fruit you can, in small doses throughout the day. I’ve never understood the passion for juicing the fruit, I’d rather bite and chew, but have to admit I’ve occasionally stopped at one of those juicing stands in the city in the heat of summer and bought a berry apple slushie.Chop an assortment of fruit and combine it with salad ingredients including cubes of cheese, add your favourite salad dressing, complete nutrition in a bowl. Don’t worry too much about being unable to stomach other foods. This too shall pass.

Oooo..I bet you’re having a boy. I totally craved citrus with my BoyChild. I was sucking back these lemonade popsicle things like no one’s business.

I wish I could help with food, but I was spared the barfiness with pregnancy. Rice maybe?

I lived off crackers, water and sometimes juice during my first trimester. Everything turned me off. Even chocolate! Hubby had to eat his cereal outside, the sight of milk made me sick.

So I ate crackers. All kinds. And thankfully my 2nd trimester was better and I ate like a cow…and then soon resembled one.

Umm…candy bars?

I ate a TON of peanut butter when I was pregnant with dd. Peanut butter and ice cream. I just craved peanut butter, and I usually don’t really like the stuff! I don’t remember what I craved with ds…that second child thing, I guess. BTW, LOVE the look of the new site. LURVE IT!

Dawn July 26, 2008 at 2:48 pm

cottage cheese and potato chips
jalapeno poppers (w/ cream cheese)
frozen peaches (3rd trimester I’d put the bag on my tummy and piss Alex off)
I make cous cous or quinoa and put garlic, olive oil, red vinegar and feta in it. Lots of protein there.
