Social Media Chat

in Blogging

Last night, I was having a conversation with Naomi about subscribing and subscribers and slowly, our conversation grew and morphed to include Kelley and Clairey, and we covered everything from subscribing and the state of our Google Readers to PR companies and reviews.

We tweeted so much that we sent Naomi to twitter jail and likely cluttered up the streams for nearly everyone we know (sorry guys).

But it was a lot of fun and from what people had to say, it seems it’s something that people are interested in, especially newer bloggers.

Louisa came in during the conversation and we’ve since discussed it and tonight, we’re going to trial doing the same thing, on Facebook, and invite everyone over to the Mummy Bloggers Blog facebook page to participate.

The idea is to share information on social media and how to get the best out of it, what we do personally and why.You can ask questions and we’ll endeavour to answer them, as best we can and I’ll probably be asking questions about the why’s and whyfor’s of some things.

So, meet us over on the Facebook page tonight (Wed) at 9pm AEST and we’ll hopefully be chatting up a storm.

I will tweet and remind you too.

***

A few answers to questions I know you’re going to ask:

This is only in Beta stages – we’re looking at chat room technology, or other various ways of doing the same thing easily, if there is enough interest.

We elected for Facebook, to prevent cluttering up the twitter streams – until twitter develops a mute button that allows you to filter out some people, or some hashtags, I’d prefer not to clutter it. I know how frustrating it can be to be not interested in a “twitter party” or similar thing happening and have that be all that’s in your feed.

Also facebook, we wanted the information to stick around, so that people can use it and refer to it later. Twitter is relatively transient and tweets get pushed down easily and you can miss replies and half the conversation.

If you’ve got ideas about how this could work, suggestions, or questions, please let me know in the comments and we’ll see what we can do!

And remember, 9pm AEST tonight on the Mummy Bloggers Blog Facebook page.

Hopefully I can rejoin the conversation, and hopefully not upset anyone. I come from a perspective of not pushing too hard to make a personal blog a business but to just enjoy it, write well, engage, tell your story and the blog will grow on its own. I know this is the opposite of what many people want to hear.

Professional blogs, or blogs attached to businesses are also interesting to me (as that is what I am paid to do) and there is little information regarding professional businesses and blogging so I am often on my own trying to learn and trial things. Lots of fun, so much to say and ask, yes best we get off twitter!

Louisa April 27, 2011 at 4:52 pm

I don’t think you’ll offend anyone Claire. I’ve been blogging for 4.5years and it’s always been personal & I hope my blog always will be. I think there are opportunities out there that I’m interested in pursuing but they are things I hope to do ‘because’ of my blog & not ‘on’ my blog. That’s why I’m not a fan of the small giveaways, they take away from what my blog is all about. Looking forward to chatting more tonight!

Veronica April 27, 2011 at 4:55 pm

I don’t think you’d upset anyone with your perspective! I like that we’ve all got differing opinions on what works and doesn’t work for us.

Kellie April 27, 2011 at 1:43 pm

Hey Veronica,
I’m hoping to goodness this doesn’t come across spammy and am more than happy to elaborate on things further in tonight’s chat if anyone’s got any questions, but……
I’m hosting a Royal Wedding Pyjama Part-ay on Friday night from 7pm. The program I’m using is one used by Fairfax and News Ltd newspapers on their websites to do live events. It’s a live chat program and can be linked in with Twitter etc if you want (although, I think I’ll leave that option for the moment). You’ll see on my site from tomorrow night a link to the party, with a countdown to the event going live. People can come in and be panellist (ie they don’t have to wait for their comments to be moderated and can act as special guests if you want) or people can just chat away and I’ll moderate their comments as they come in. At the end of it, there’s a transcript of the event, which will stay on my blog forever.
Anyway, as I said, I’m more than happy to answer more questions on this tonight if you have any.

Veronica April 27, 2011 at 4:54 pm

Hi Kellie, I’d love to know more! What is it called?

Kellie April 28, 2011 at 4:24 pm

Hey Veronica,
It’s called Cover It Live. I might look at doing a post on it early next week, because I’m getting quite a few enquiries about it.
Feel free to pop in tomorrow night to the “party” to see how it works. If it’s successful, I might even do something for the Logies too.
Also, you can check out two transcripts from live chats my hubby organised for The Advocate (he’s done quite a few now!).
They are:

Hmmm, I might be interested in joining in – even though I’m in a bit of a different demographic I still am interested in seeing what people have to say or ideas people have.

I will try and remember and lookout on twitter for a reminder.

Veronica April 27, 2011 at 4:53 pm

I’d like to have you part of it and I think your different perspective would be really welcome!

Kathy April 27, 2011 at 2:34 pm

Sounds interesting, but I don’t do Facebook. We divorced last year and I’m just not ready for casual social encounters with it yet 😉

Have fun though, hopefully a lot of a good ideas will flow from it.

Veronica April 27, 2011 at 4:56 pm

If you’re not a member, can you still stickybeak at the conversation?

Kelley @ Magnetoboldtoo April 27, 2011 at 6:45 pm

Depending on the boy, I will be there with bells on.

Alas you won’t be able to HEAR the bells, but I will wear them nontheless cause I am freaky like that.

Veronica April 27, 2011 at 6:52 pm

I like bells. And because it’s facebook, if you’re a bit late, it shouldn’t matter. Oestensibly of course.

Marita April 27, 2011 at 6:47 pm

I really enjoyed reading your twitter discussion last night, learned lots.

I do love that Echofon for the iPhone had a mute button, so I can mute hashtags and twitter users if I need to. I have used it to mute a few annoying hashtags (those band name Memes.)

Veronica April 27, 2011 at 6:53 pm

Echofon has a mute button? I want one on twitter web!! I would love to mute some hashtags.

Marita April 27, 2011 at 6:56 pm

It is brilliant. Saves me wading through discussions I’m not interested in.

Naomi Ellis April 27, 2011 at 7:05 pm

Yes, my first experience in twitter jail. Such a great conversation though. I am hoping to get the cherubs to bed so I can join in. See you tonight hopefully. N x

Veronica April 28, 2011 at 9:15 am

Twiter jail is boring!

Jenn April 28, 2011 at 1:57 am

Okay, I missed the conversation because I was in bed but I was able to review the Facebook page. What I am interested in right now is, what in the world is Twitter jail?!
Jenn

Veronica April 28, 2011 at 9:15 am

Twitter jail is when they kick you out for tweeting too much. They say “I’m sorry, you’ve reached your usage limit for the hour” and then refuse to let you tweet, or follow anyone, etc.

river April 28, 2011 at 4:48 pm

Tweet Tweet.
Tweet Tweet.
Ha Ha
That’s me pretending to be on Twitter.
I hope you all had some really interesting conversations and some good ideas have come of it. I missed it because of course I’m not a twitterer (tweeter?), plus it’s Thursday already and I didn’t get this post yesterday.
