Well now

in Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Headfuck

A few of you already know this, but Isaac had a seizure on Thursday. Just a little one, but a seizure nonetheless.

He had been refusing to nap and finally (FINALLY!) I got him to feed properly and he fell asleep at my breast. A few moments later, he started to shake. Badly. His head went from side to side and his body started to flail.

I thought, this isn’t normal. This is not just him dreaming, holy shit, Isaac!

I stayed very calm. I cuddled him and 40 seconds later he was coming out of it. His eyes opened and he looked at me, but he was still dazed. He snuggled back down, fell asleep for another 2-3 minutes and then woke up, bright as a button and happy as he could be.

Or you know, as happy as a napless baby with only 5 minutes of sleep under his belt could be.

SO.

Yesterday, I rang our doctor to ask for an appointment. On discovering why I wanted an appointment (‘My 6 month old BABY had a SEIZURE and I want to see someone TODAY PLEASE’) they requested that I head down to emergency with him to be seen by a Paediatrician.

Insert big sigh here.

I KNOW he needed to see a Paed, but sitting down at emergency all day wasn’t going to be fun.

And it turns out, I was right. It actually kinda sucked. We sat there all day. ALLLLL DAY.

Eventually, after Isaac gave a urine sample (Yay Nathan on the catch of a lifetime! And on Mum for spotting it starting. Me? I was taking a break from the penis watch) and they looked at him and listened to him, and hours later they sent us home.

Isaac was pronounced ‘Much too well to come up to the Paeds Ward and potentially catch everything going around up there. However…’

However.

They want to see him as an outpatient in the next few days for an EEG to test for epilepsy or any other seizure causing things. Then they want to see him in the Paeds clinic for a follow up. With the family history of epilepsy (Nathan’s mum has epilepsy) and the family history of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which can have seizure like ‘episodes‘ as a symptom, they’re keen to investigate.

We’re also to take him straight back to emergency if he has another seizure. Joy.

I swear, this son of mine is determined to make me grey.

Marylin July 18, 2009 at 6:45 pm

Oh honey I had no idea, I’m so sorry to hear that.

Glad he’s been given the all clear by the paeds ward. Could it have been a febrile convulsion?

((huge hugs)) I just wish I could give you one for real. xxx

Veronica July 18, 2009 at 7:14 pm

No, it wasnโ€™t a febrile convulsion because there was no temperature before or after. They arenโ€™t sure what it was, but they are sure it wasnโ€™t a febrile convulsion.

Bugger. Hope it was just a one off thing. Pack up all your clothes and bedding and camp out in the hospital for a while, that will save travelling. There’s plenty of vending machines for snacks and drinks for Amy and the hospital canteen for proper dinners……..

Kathy July 18, 2009 at 7:45 pm

Goodness, how scary. I hope all the tests show nothing to be concerned about and that it does not repeat. Any consolation, my little bro had two of these – except bigger ones by the sounds of it – at 6 and 9 months respectively, and while they never found a cause, he never had a repeat and is a strappingly healthy and neurologically normal, albeit often irritating, 29-year-old.

Xbox4NappyRash July 18, 2009 at 8:29 pm

trouble all the way with him I reckon!

Toni July 18, 2009 at 9:18 pm

Man you must have somehow pissed the fates off big-time. As if you needed more drama in your life right now…. hoping and praying that gorgeous gorgeous boy is ok.

xx

Brenda July 18, 2009 at 9:40 pm

That is so scary Veronica. I hope and pray there’s nothing serious there. Poor Isaac, and thank God for mummy’s boobies (makes everything alright again…almost everything).xx

Barbara July 18, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Oh crapity crap. Sorry to hear this – scary stuff. Here’s hoping it was a one off.

Mrs. C July 18, 2009 at 10:28 pm

???!!

This is awful! Thanks for posting, though, because I thought you were just being quiet and introspective. :[

witchypoo July 18, 2009 at 11:22 pm

I know how terrifying it is to have a child with seizures, and dealing with all the poking and prodding that the hospital staff has to dish out. You really have to be your child’s advocate.
And here I thought it was Amy’s job to give you grey hair. (((((hugs)))))

emery jo July 18, 2009 at 11:46 pm

my son does this every time he is overtired and falls asleep while nursing. I’ve asked around, and from what I can find, it is somewhat common. I was planning on asking my pediatrician about it next time I see him– I’ll let you know what he has to say about it all!

Jayne July 18, 2009 at 11:47 pm

No, Issac is making sure you lose all your hair before he turns it grey ๐Ÿ˜‰
Seriously, Von, start kicking up a fuss if they drag their feet.

Chrissy July 18, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Oh, Veronica! How terrifying ๐Ÿ™ Glad Isaac is okay. Sending you lots of positive thoughts and hugs.

Tanya July 19, 2009 at 12:13 am

fuck. hope it isnt anything too bad…fingers crossed.

maiden53 July 19, 2009 at 1:22 am

V~ I am so sorry! I bet that was terrifying to have to watch… I hope they drs find the issue soon, so that it can be corrected. Hi to Amy ๐Ÿ™‚

nikki July 19, 2009 at 1:39 am

Aw damn. The shit keeps rolling down hill doesn’t it? Hope everything is okay from here on out.

lceel July 19, 2009 at 2:34 am

You know … sometimes those things just happen. Sometimes, they’re the result of some transient thing that doesn’t last and they never figure it out. Kids just do that sometimes. I hope that’s all it was. Something that didn’t last and never comes back and they can’t figure out.

Catriona July 19, 2009 at 2:38 am

Oh my! My son has epilepsy. He had his first at 2 months old. He’s now 5 months and is on Topamax to prevent them. I hope this was just a one time thing for him! I know how you feel! Big Hugs!

anne nahm July 19, 2009 at 3:33 am

How nerve wracking. Hope it was just a brain fart, and if not, that it is something easily dealt with. Kisses to sweet boy!

Jenni July 19, 2009 at 5:12 am

christ, veronica, how terrifying. i’m glad he hasn’t had another one. take care.

Andi July 19, 2009 at 6:11 am

Oh, poor Isaac and poor YOU!! So sorry to hear about the seizure! If it helps at all, most seizures in infants are nothing serious, so I hope it turns out to be that for you. You’ve certainly dealt with enough for the time being.

Jeanette July 19, 2009 at 6:21 am

Hectic!! That would not happen in this country… I would have a paed see it it on the same day!
(((HUGS))) hope it doesn’t happen again

Jessica Breastfeeding Hannah July 19, 2009 at 8:38 am

Sorry you had to have that experience, Veronica. I can see that you have ruled out febrile induced seizure. Hopefully you have researched this and know, as Andi pointed out, that it’s probably nothing serious.

achelois July 19, 2009 at 9:34 am

Hello Veronica,
You so did the right thing just remaining calm. This may never happen again but if it does -Trust- neurologists, they are very clever. I am not sure if you know but my husband and son have ‘diagnosed’ epilepsy although the diagnosis took a long time for my son as normal tests came back fine. Finally to cut a long story short he had a 72 hour ambulatory EEG which diagnosed the type of epilepsy they both have. My son tried topomax but an unfortunate side effect was it made him stop speaking so we changed to eplim chrono (sodium valproate). If it ever happens again (god willing it won’t) it can be helpful to catch the episode on video (a mobile phone one is fine). I have given our short story as there is great fear much unwarranted surrounding epilepsy and associated conditions. I am thinking of you and hoping it was a one off. Normally when I ended up on a ward with my son for a day or a couple all was well and I had a very bored son to deal with. With little one’s its hard because they cannot explain too much – Veronica, you are all very much in my thoughts.

Marie July 19, 2009 at 10:48 am

oh my.

Karen (Miscellaneous Mum) July 19, 2009 at 11:14 am

I was going to suggest febrile convulsion, but if that’s not it then I’m sorry and i hope you get your answers very soon. very scary ๐Ÿ™

Pop and Ice July 19, 2009 at 11:25 am

Ah, I see other comments about febrile seizures from other commenters. But they’re usually associated with a high fever. And you would have been admitted had that been the case. My son had a fever than suddenly zoomed over 105, he seized and we were admitted. They never figured out what was wrong except that he had a virus.

I feel sorry that you had to spend all day waiting at the hospital. That is awful – and then to be sent home. But, yes, you’re more likely to catch something else while in the hospital so it’s to be avoided if at all possible.

I’ve never heard of seizure-like episodes for Ehlers-Danlos sufferers. Do you have a link you can send me? My Lainy was diagnosed with partial seizures only a few months after being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos. I was/am about to pull my hair out – something else, dear God? Yet something else?!!!!

Sharon July 19, 2009 at 12:58 pm

Shit, Veronica. That boy of yours sure knows how to press ALL the buttons. My niece had a few non-febrile convulsions as a baby and they never did find out why but she has been fine ever since (she’s now 33 and has 2 kids of her own)so I’m hoping it’s the same for Isaac.

Cri July 20, 2009 at 6:28 am

shit >.< i hope they find things out speedily. actually, erase that. they WILL find answers speedily.
i will be praying for you guys ๐Ÿ™‚

Joyce-Anne July 20, 2009 at 2:25 pm

You can’t catch a break now, can you? Sending more ((hugs)). And, I really hope this never happens again for you and Isaac and everyone’s sake.

Sharnee July 20, 2009 at 9:14 pm

I was sorry to hear about Isaacs fit ๐Ÿ™ I’m so glad to read that he’s ok – fingers and toes crossed that it never happens again. xx

Janet B July 20, 2009 at 9:41 pm

Oh no! Things are really not looking up right now are they! It does amuse me that in SA we can get to see a specialist immediately! Hopefully the tests will all be ok and it doesn’t happen again!
Sending special love from Jozi!

Hyphen Mama July 21, 2009 at 4:50 am

Dear Universe,

WTF?

Seriously, WTF!

tiff July 21, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Hugs.

I hope they work out what it is and you can have some peace of mind soon.

Katie Cliff July 23, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Hope this just goes away, I pray to God for that

Taz July 23, 2009 at 4:07 pm

hoping they find out what it is soon..

big hugs

how are you doing?

Kelley @ Magnetoboldtoo July 23, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Too had febrile convulsions when her temp was 38. Just above normal. So we didn’t even know she was sick till she fitted.

We ended up having to carry medication to be administered rectally, lovingly dubbed her ‘fit kit’ for four years!

Watching a fit is way scarier than what it actually is. Hopefully it is just a one off occurrence for you babe. You have been through way too much this year already.
