Sometimes, the silence is deafening

in Life

Yesterday morning, Amy woke up before I did.

Silently, she climbed over her bedroom gate and into the lounge room. She then climbed over the gate into the kitchen, where she found some banana cake. She grabbed the cake and climbed back into the lounge room and then back into her bedroom. So quietly that we didn’t even wake up.

When Isaac woke up at 8am, I found Amy sitting in her bed with a book and cake.

She’s definitely my daughter.

This morning, while I was laying down in the bedroom feeding Isaac and talking to Nathan; Amy climbed the gate into the kitchen again.

This time, she grabbed herself a bowl and poured herself a bowl of cornflakes. She added sugar, lots of sugar and when I emerged from the bedroom, she was waiting for me to open the fridge and pour the milk.

Remind me why I have a gate into the kitchen again?

This sounds like progress! At least you get some sleep. How long does it take to help her clean up the mess she makes? Worth the extra sleep. Guess you’ll be putting the cake in the fridge after this, huh?

Two gates. One on top of the other. Good luck.

Suddenly I feel like a book and cake. She’s got good taste. 🙂

Oh I would totally do the same if it meant getting cake! (sorry, I know that doesn’t help).
I am debating on what I will do myself when my little monsters start moving around.

to try and keep the toddler out?

Just be thankful that she wasn’t able to pour herself some milk! Toddlers + milk cartons = floor washing time!

I’m estimating another six months to total independence. Free time for you Veronica. Let her know that cornflakes can be eaten without milk. Then just give her a drink when you get up.

What River said! Maybe you could wire the gate up to the electricity? Not enough to hurt her, just give her a little shock – make her think twice about scaling it. And don’t leave any poles that could be used for vaulting around. I’m impressed that she did it so quietly. My pair sound like a couple of elephants thundering around most of the time.

It’s awesome when they get to the stage of trying to *not* wake you up in the mornings – a bit of mess to clean up yes, but sleeep… glorious sleeeep!

Given Amy’s climbing skills I’m amazed it’s taken her this long to scale the barrier. My younger son was going over ours at little more than a year old. Little bugger used to hold the top of the gate and walk up the wall then shimmy over the top! Fortunately this was not something he could do silently but I rigged the gates with little jangly bells just to be sure of hearing him. The self catering sounds useful though, perhaps she could bring you breakfast in bed?

to slow the toddler down enough that you will sometimes catch her lol

HAHAHA!! When Wynnie was into this kind of thing, we’d leave small bowls of saltine crackers and a water bottle in her room for her 5am “must eat food now” episodes. It bought me an extra couple hours sleep.

expensive coco all over the floor?

achelois July 25, 2009 at 9:45 am

Just think time will fly and soon she will bring you a nice cuppa in the morning……

I love it! A book and a cake. If I could have both of those and quiet in which to enjoy them I would be so happy.

Ha ha! She’s self-reliant and a very good girl. The first time Julia got through our gate and up the stairs when she was little, she was flushing things down the toilet.

You think escaping into the kitchen is a problem! We took our girls to Mauritius and they woke up ultra early, figured out how to open the door and escaped onto the beach. We found them half and hour later swanning around on the loungers in their nighties.
